St. Peter, MN (Blugolds.com) – The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire women's soccer team opened the 2015 season with a 2-2 tie in double overtime against Gustavus Adolphus.
The Blugolds struck first with a goal from Shoua Khang at the 2:27 mark off an assist from Hannah Jacobson.
Samantha Matuszak found the back of the net at 8:03, giving the Blugolds a 2-0 advantage. However, the Gusties Sophie Leininger found Brittany Chase twice within a 10 minute span to knot the score at 2.
Defense was the story for the rest of the game, as neither team could generate a goal.
UW-Eau Claire and Gustavus played evenly throughout the game as each team had 17 shots on goal. The Blugolds took nine shots in the first period, four in the second and two in each of the overtime periods.
UWEC (0-0-1) will travel to Oregon over the weekend and will play Pacific, Lewis & Clark and George Fox before returning to Eau Claire for their home opener on Sept. 9.
