Wrestlers compete in Day 1 of NCAA Regional

EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (Blugolds.com) – After the first day of the NCAA Division III Upper Midwest Wrestling Regional Tournament, the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire wrestling team is in 11th place.

Hosting their first NCAA Regional, the Blugolds tallied 33.5 points on Friday while Augsburg University leads the field with 100 points.

Four Blugolds are still in contention for a spot on the podium in their respective weight classes, Thomas Severson (Fr. – Marathon, WI/D.C. Everest) – 133, David Dudych (So. - West Dundee, IL/Harry D. Jacobs) – 149, Ryan Hannah (Fr. – Genoa, WI/Viroqua) – 157, and Toby Mosley (Sr. – Sparta, WI) – 174.

In the first round at 133 pounds, Severson defeated Concordia's (WI) Ramiro Vasquez by decision, 6-0 but in the quarterfinal, lost by fall to Saint John's Noah Becker. In his final match of the day in the consolation round, Severson got another decision (4-0), this time over UW-Whitewater's Blake Huffmon. Severson will face Scott Arneson of UW-Platteville on Saturday.

At 149, Dudych earned a pin over Pacific's (OR) Samuel Cortez (4:50) in his first match of the day. The sophomore fell in the second round to Ty Johnson of Concordia-Moorhead by a 13-9 decision but bounced back to earn another fall in the consolation round to remain alive in the tournament and will face UW-Whitewater's Bernard Casella on Saturday.

Hannah narrowly fell by decision in the first round but earned two wins in his next two matches. Against Platteville's Tony Bivens, Hannah won by major decision (13-0) and in the consolation round, recorded a 4-0 decision over Oshkosh's Muzi Siseltha. The newcomer will face Luke Smiley of UW-Stevens Point on Saturday.

Mosley earned a quick pin in the first round (0:32) over Cameron Caldwell of Concordia (WI) but lost by fall in the quarterfinal. In the consolation round, the senior recorded a 6-5 decision over Hunter Harrison of Wheaton (IL) and will face Stevens Point's James Borgen on Saturday.
