Blugolds come up short against Pioneers

EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (Blugolds.com) - The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire wrestling team faced the UW-Platteville Pioneers at the McPhee Center on Friday night. The Blugolds narrowly lost to Platteville, 15-20.

The Blugolds started strong leading 8-6 going into the intermission after major decision wins. David Dudych (So. – West Dundee, IL/Harry D. Jacobs) won by major decision (14-2) at 149 and Thomas Severson (Fr. – Marathon, WI/D.C. Everest) tallied a win at 133 with a 15-3 win, the second win of the week for both wrestlers.

After the break, UW-Platteville took the lead but Connor Hanson (Sr. – Harmony, MN/Fillmore Central) then won by a decision of 5-2 at 165 to bring the Blugolds back within one of Platteville with a score of 11-12.

Evan Lawrence (So – Hugo, MN/Mehtemedi) got the major decision win (11-2) at 174 over Platteville's Jacob Skelnar which brought the Blugolds just short of Platteville with a score of 15-17 going into the final match. However, UW-Platteville took the final match to win the dual by a score of 15-20.

The Blugolds will travel to the UW-Stevens Point next Wednesday, November 12 at 7 p.m. for another Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) dual. Follow the action on Blugold Game Day or on the 'UWEC Blugolds' app on your mobile device.
