Hakes leads Blugolds at Concordia Open

MEQUON, Wis. (blugolds.com) – The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire wrestling team competed at the Concordia Open on Saturday with Austen Hakes (So. – River Falls, WI) leading the Blugolds with a first place finish at 285 pounds.

Results

Hakes won by fall in his first three matches of the day, defeating UW-Stevens Point's Noah Wieczorek (1:38), Whitewater's Cadin Koeppel (2:18) and Wartburg's Slade Siefuentes (1:57). In his fourth match, the sophomore won a 3-1 decision over Max Bishop of Wabash. In the championship, Hakes won by decision again, this time with a score of 4-0 over Bowen Wileman of Wartburg.

"It was a great tournament for Austen," said Head Coach Tim Fader. "We saw him make adjustments from his matches earlier in the day and he was really solid in all three positions."

Also earning a place in their respective weight classes for the Blugolds were Connor Hanson (Sr. – Harmony, MN/Fillmore Central) (6th – 165), Tyler Burt (So. – Beloit, WI/Turner) (7th – 285), Brady Bastyr (So. – Prior Lake, MN/Lakeville South) (8th – 157) and Evan Lawrence (So – Hugo, MN/Mehtemedi) (8th – 174).

Hanson finished with a record of 3-3 on the day which included a win by major decision (18-4).

Burt was an impressive 5-1, which included 4 wins by fall and a 9-1 decision.

Bastyr and Lawrence both finished the day 4-2 with two pins.

Next up for the Blugolds is the MSOE Invitational on Dec. 1st in Milwaukee before Eau Claire returns home on Dec. 5 when they will host Whitewater for another conference dual which will be held in Zorn Arena.
