Women's Hockey falls to Falcons

EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (Blugolds.com) – The top two women's hockey teams in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) played for the regular season title on Saturday afternoon, with the University of Wisconsin-River Falls defeating UW-Eau Claire, 4-1.

The Falcons scored first, tallying a goal six minutes into the game. They would add their second goal early in the second period and a third midway through to take a 3-0 lead heading into the final period.

Eau Claire got on the board midway through the third period, as Lexi Wilson (Sr. - Eagan, MN) found the back of the net off an assist from Morgan Zirbel (So-Green Bay, WI/Ashwaubenon). However, the Falcons would add their fourth goal with just under two minutes to play to seal the win and the regular season WIAC title.

The Blugolds held a 26-21 edge in shots and the squads were even in faceoffs, with both teams winning 24.

Sydney McKersie (Fr-Middleton, WI) took the loss in goal and falls to 1-1 on the season. The newcomer tallied 17 saves on the night.

Eau Claire (18-5-2, 7-2-0 WIAC) will be the number two seed in the WIAC tournament and host third-seeded Stevens Point on Friday, Feb. 22 and Saturday, Feb. 23, both at 3 p.m. at Hobbs Ice Arena. Follow the action on Blugold Game Day or on the 'UWEC Blugolds' app on your mobile device.
