No. 3 Blugolds fall to No. 1 Pointers

EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (Blugolds.com) – The No. 3 University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire men's hockey team hosted No. 1 UW-Stevens Point on Saturday night, with the Pointers coming away with a 7-1 win to remain undefeated.

Despite outshooting Stevens Point 14-12 in the first period, it was the Pointers who took the lead early, scoring three goals in the first 15 minutes of the game. The Blugolds would cut into the lead with a power play goal by Scott Munro (Jr. – Vancouver, BC/St. George's) at 16:31, thank to assists from Lucas Kohls (Sr. – Forest Lake, MN) and Jon Richards (So. – Callaway, MN/Detroit Lakes).

Eau Claire would again outshot Stevens Point in the second (18-14) but they could not find the back of the net while the Pointers tallied three more goals.

The third period was nearly even in shots with 14 for Stevens Point and 13 for Eau Claire, but it was the visiting squad that would score the period's lone goal.

For the game, Eau Claire held a 45-40 edge in shots and Zach Dyment (So. – Abbotsford, BC/Yale Secondary) and David Johnson(Jr. Bloomington, MN/Kennedy) combined for 33 saves.

The Blugolds fall to 18-5-2 and 4-3-1 in the WIAC but still remain the number 2 seed in the WIAC Championship Tournament (presented by Culver's) and will host third-seeded UW-Superior on Feb. 22-23, both games slated for 7:30 p.m. Follow the action on Blugold Game Day or on the 'UWEC Blugolds' app on your mobile device.
