Zavoral scores twice in third period to lift Blugolds past Pointers

STEVENS POINT, Wis. (Blugolds.com) – The No. 9 University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire women's hockey team picked up their fourth Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) win on Saturday, coming from behind to beat UW-Stevens Point, 3-2.

Facing a 2-0 deficit heading into the third period, the Blugolds erupted for three goals in the first eight minutes of the third period to earn the win.

Though the Blugolds outshot the Pointers 23-4 in the first period (15-0 in shots on goal), it was scoreless after one.  In the second period, Eau Claire again outshot Stevens Point (20-5) but it was the Pointers who got on the board, scoring twice to take a two-goal lead into the final frame.

Hanna Zavoral (So. – St. Paul, MN/Highland Park) got the Blugolds on the board first, tallying a goal at the 2:49 mark of the third period. Courtney Wittig (Sr-Green Bay, WI/Bay Port) would tie the game three minutes later on a Kelly Knetter(Sr-Wausau, WI/West assist. Zavoral would get the game-winner two minutes later thanks to an assist by Elizabeth Bauer (Jr-Wausau, WI/East).

Eau Claire dominated in shots, outshooting Stevens Point 62-11 and recorded 38 shots on goal to the Pointers' seven.

The Blugolds (15-4-2, 5-2 WIAC) and Pointers (8-11-2, 1-4-1 WIAC) will face off again in Stevens Point on Friday at 7 p.m. before returning to Hobbs Ice Arena to host Stevens Point on Saturday at 2 p.m. Follow the action on Blugold Game Day or on the 'UWEC Blugolds' app on your mobile device.
