EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (Blugolds.com) – After defeating St. Norbert College 3-1 on Friday, the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire women's hockey team recorded a dominating 7-0 win over the Green Knights Saturday afternoon to complete the sweep at Hobbs Ice Arena.
In the first period, Eau Claire would keep St. Nobert to only 1 shot compared to Eau Claire's 17. Courtney Wittig (Sr-Green Bay, WI/Bay Port) would open the scoring for the Blugolds at 7:40 with an assist from Elizabeth Bauer (Jr-Wausau, WI/East). The Blugolds would score again at 12:30 with a bounce off the glass, as Erin Goodell (Sr-Maplewood, MN/Woodbury) would claim the second goal. To end the period, Morgan Zirbel (So-Green Bay, WI/Ashwaubenon) would get her first collegiate goal giving Eau Claire a 3-0 lead heading into the first intermission.
The Blugolds came out ready to go in the second period with Wittig scoring 17 seconds after the puck dropped. Ellie Burris (So-Mound Westonka, MN/Mound Westonka) would get her own rebound for the Blugolds' 5th goal of the game and at the end of the period, Bauer would get a short-handed goal to earn the Blugolds the 6-0 lead to end the second period.
Eau Claire would add another insurance goal in the third as Lexi Wilson (Sr-Eagan, MN/Eagan) scored the final goal for Eau Claire at 15:05.
Erin Connolly (Jr-Mequon, WI/Homestead) would earn the shutout, saving all 45 shots she faced in net. The Blugolds would out-shoot the Knights 45-12 and won 31 of 41 faceoffs.
