Bauer & Wittig lead Blugolds in 5-1 win over Bethel

EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (Blugolds.com) – The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire women's hockey team picked up their second win of the season on Friday night, defeating Bethel University 5-1 at Hobbs Ice Arena.

The Blugolds scored two goals in the first and second periods and one in the final frame, with Elizabeth Bauer (Jr. – Wausau, WI/East) having a hand in each Eau Claire goal to record five points on the night while teammate Courtney Wittig (Sr. – Green Bay, WI/Bay Port) tallied four. All of Eau Claire's five goals would come on the powerplay.

Bauer and Wittig earned assists on Hanna Zavoral's (So. – St. Paul, MN/Highland Park) goal at 11:12 in the first period and Wittig would score a goal of her own six minutes later, thanks to assists by Bauer and Holly Turnbull (Sr. – Hayward, WI).

Bethel lit the lap for the first and only time of the night early in the second period, but Bauer would respond with a goal of her own off assists from Zavoral and Wittig while the Blugolds took advantage of another powerplay.

Turnbull, Bauer and Wittig would connect again late in the second, as Turnbull notched her fourth goal of the season and Wittig recorded her fourth point of the evening.

Emily Bauer (Jr. – Wausau, WI/East) would put Eau Claire's final goal on the board midway through the third as the Blugolds improve to 2-1 on the season.

Goaltender Anna Veazey (Jr. – Rapid City, SD/Dakota Ridge) earned her first win of the season, tallying 24 saves.

The Blugolds outshot the Royals 37-25 and were 5 of 8 on the powerplay while Bethel was 0-3.

Eau Claire (2-1) will be back at Hobbs on Saturday night as they host another team from the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC), the Gustavus Adolphus Golden Gusties.
