Women's Hockey falls to Superior, 2-1

SUPERIOR, Wis. (Blugolds.com) – The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire women's hockey team got back into Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) play on Friday, falling on the road to UW-Superior by a score of 2-1.

The Blugolds came into the game on a 4-game win streak, including a 3-2 win over No. 4 Adrian on Monday afternoon. The Blugolds came out firing in the first period, out-shooting the Yellowjackets 14-6, but it was Superior who made the most of their shots, scoring twice to the Blugolds lone goal.

Superior scored just thirty seconds into the game, but Holly Turnbull (Jr. – Hayward, WI) took advantage of a power play, scoring at 10:17 to even the score. Courtney Wittig (Jr. – Green Bay, WI/Bay Port) and Sami Meister (So. – Plymouth, MN/Wayzata) earned assists on the goal.

The Yellowjackets would manage to get the game-winner with just 15 seconds left in the period as Kaleigh Martinson scored on the power play.

Eau Claire would out-shoot the home squad 19-5 in the second period and 9-8 in the third but wasn't able to score. For the game, the Blugolds dominated the shots total 42-19 but Superior held the edge in face offs, 45-27.

 Erin Connolly (So. - Mequon, WI/Homestead) took the loss in goal, tallying 17 saves on the night.

The Blugolds (11-6-2, 0-3 WIAC) will host the Yellowjackets on Saturday night at Hobbs Ice Arena. The game is slated for a 7 p.m. start. Follow the action on Blugold Game Day.
