Women's Hockey comes up short against Falcons

RIVER FALLS, Wis. (Blugolds.com) – The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire women's hockey team took on No. 2 UW-River Falls on Saturday night, falling to the Falcons by a score of 3-2.

The second-ranked Falcons have only two losses on the season, both coming from the first two meetings with the Blugolds with the last being Friday night where Eau Claire handed River Falls a 3-1 loss. Despite scoring first on Saturday, the Blugolds were unable to earn the sweep for the season.

Kelly Knetter (So.-Wausau, WI/West) put Eau Claire on the board at the 13:31 mark, scoring on the power play thanks to an assist from Holly Turnbull (So. – Hayward, WI).

However, the second period saw two Falcon goals to take a 2-1 lead heading into the third period.

River Falls took advantage on a power play in the third, adding their third goal of the night at 11:14. Claudia Gagnon (Sr. – Duluth, MN/East) found the back of the net with under a minute remaining, but the Blugold comeback ran out of time.

Eau Claire had another stellar performance between the pipes from Erin Connolly (Fr.-Mequon, WI/Homestead), who recorded 28 saves.

The Blugolds have earned the #2 seed in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Tournament (presented by Culver's) and will host UW-Stevens Point on Feb. 24 and 25.
