Women’s Hockey Succumbs to Stevens Point

EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (Blugolds.com) – The eighth-ranked UW-Stevens Point women's hockey team set the tone early outshooting the UW-Eau Claire women's hockey team 21-9 in the first period as the Pointers defeated the Blugolds on Senior Night 4-0 at Hobbs Ice Center.

The Blugolds fall to 5-17-1 overall and 1-8-1 in the WIAC while the Pointers improve to 14-6-2 overall and 5-3-2 in conference play. 

The first period was highlighted by having no penalties called and the play of goalie Paige Turner (Jr.-Iron River, WI/Duluth East) between the pipes.  The Pointers led 1-0 but Turner saved 20 shots on goal in the game's first 20 minutes.

The Blugolds turned up their offensive efforts in the second half outshooting the Pointers 16-14 but was unable to light up the lamp for its efforts.  Stevens Point scored goals at 4:02 and 17:47 of the second period increasing its lead to 3-0.

The Eau Claire penalty kill unit held Stevens Point scoreless on two attempts in the third period but was unable to generate any scoring while being outshot 17-9.  The Pointers added an insurance goal at 1:20 securing the 4-0 victory.

Jennifer Thomsen (Fr.-Apple Valley, MN) led the Blugolds with seven shots on goal.  Paige Dale (So.-Andover, MN) and Andi Husted (Sr.-Scottsdale, AZ/Shattuck St. Mary's) each fired five shots on goal.

Turner saved 48 shots for the Blugolds.  It was the seventh time this season that Turner has saved 40 or more shots in a game.

The three seniors honored before the game were Husted, Amanda Kane (Sr.-Maplewood, MN/North St. Paul) and Sam Knutson (Sr.-North St. Paul, MN).

Eau Claire was outshot by Stevens Point 52-34.  Both teams were whistled for three minor infractions totaling six penalty minutes apiece.  The Pointers converted goals on two-of-three power play opportunities while the Blugolds went scoreless on three attempts.

The Blugolds will play their final regular season home game next Saturday, February 14 when they face conference-leading UW-River Falls at Hobbs Ice Center.  Face-off is set for 2:00 p.m.
