Women’s Hockey Stung by Superior

EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (Blugolds.com) – Down 3-2 half way through the second period, the UW-Eau Claire women's hockey team could not derail a swarming UW-Superior squad as the Blugolds lost to the Yellowjackets 7-2 here tonight at Hobbs Ice Center.

The Blugolds fall to 4-15-1 overall and 0-6-1 in the WIAC while the Yellowjackets improve to 14-5-0 and 4-3-0 in conference play.  Superior is currently receiving votes in the latest USCHO.com NCAA Division III national poll. 

Down 2-0 in the second period Ashley Baugher (Jr.-Crystal Lake, IL/Central) scored her third goal of the season at 6:11 off a Blugold power play assisted by Lauren Norgren (Fr.-Fergus Falls, MN) and Andi Husted (Sr.-Scottsdale, AZ/Shattuck St. Mary's) cutting the Yellowjacket lead to 2-1.

After Superior extended their lead to 3-1 Eau Claire answered when Paige Dale (So.-Andover, MN) scored her team-leading tenth goal of the season at 10:08 of the second period unassisted getting the Blugolds back to within one goal at 3-2.

Superior scored the final four goals of the game, adding another goal in the second period and three goals in the third period to distance themselves from the Blugolds.

Goalie Paige Turner (Jr.-Iron River, WI/Duluth East) saved 47 shots in 59:07 of action.

Eau Claire was outshot 55-15.  The Blugolds went one-for-five on the power play while the Yellowjackets were two-for-seven.  Eau Claire was whistled for seven minutes serving 14 penalty minutes while Superior served 10 penalty minutes on five infractions.

The Blugolds hit the road tomorrow to conclude their home-and-away weekend with the Yellowjackets.  Face-off is set for 3:00 p.m. at Wessman Arena.
