Women’s Hockey Drops Close Battle With Stevens Point

STEVENS POINT, Wis. (Blugolds.com) – One night after tying the sixth-ranked team in the country, the UW-Eau Claire women's hockey team had a one-goal lead entering the second period but was unable to hold off UW-Stevens Point falling 2-1 here tonight at K.B. Willet Arena.

The Blugolds fall to 1-9-1 overall and 0-5-1 in the WIAC while the Pointers improve to 8-2-1 overall and 3-2-1 in the WIAC.

Sam Knutson (Sr.-North St. Paul, MN) gave the Blugolds a 1-0 lead on a power play goal at 11:42 of the first period assisted by Paige Dale (So.-Andover, MN) and Amanda Kane (Sr.-Maplewood, MN/North St. Paul).  It was Knutson's second power play goal of the season, tying her with Dale for the team lead

Stevens Point tied the game at 10:12 of the second period and took the lead in the third period scoring the eventual game-winning goal at 2:58.

Paige Turner (Jr.-Iron River, WI/Duluth East) was impressive in goal saving 45 of 47 shots faced.

Eau Claire was outshot by Stevens Point 47-18.  The Blugolds held the Pointers scoreless in five power play opportunities.  Eau Claire was called for seven penalties while the Pointers where whistled for nine infractions.

The Blugolds travel to Duluth, Minnesota next Friday, December 12 where they will face the College of St. Scholastica.  Face-off is set for 4:00 p.m.
