Women's Hockey Shutout on the Road Against Pointers

STEVENS POINT, Wis. (Blugolds.com) – The three previous times the UW-Eau Claire women's hockey team and UW-Stevens Point have squared off it was a one-goal game. The Pointers were victorious in all three, including a 4-3 overtime victory the first time around. With the Blugolds traveling to Stevens Point for the final time this year, they weren't able to keep it as close this time around, falling 4-0.

The Pointers (15-4-2, 7-2-1) wasted little time getting on the board. They scored just 26 seconds into the game and never looked back. The Blugolds (4-17-2, 0-9-1) were able to hold the Pointers scoreless though for nearly the next 40 minutes and it looked like they would go to the third period down just one goal.

But at the 19:40 mark of the third period, Eau Claire Memorial graduate, Emily Lester, scored a power-play goal to give the Pointers the 2-0 lead heading into the second intermission.

The Pointers put the game away in the third with a couple insurance goals. The first came at 6:26 and the final tally came at 9:30.

UW-Eau Claire was unable to generate many scoring chances as they finished with just 13 shots-on-goal. The Pointers held the final advantage in shots 31-13. Paige Turner (So.-Iron River, Wis./Duluth East) made 27 saves on 31 shots for the Blugolds.

There were relatively few penalties in the game, with the Blugolds finishing with four and the Pointers two. UW-Stevens Point was 1-for-4 on the power-play and the Blugolds were 0-for-2.

The Blugolds have just two games remaining in the regular season, both against UW-River Falls. They will play the Falcons on the road next Saturday, Feb. 15 at 2 p.m. In the final game of the regular season, the Blugolds will host the Falcons at Hobbs Ice Center a week later, on Saturday, Feb. 22 at 2 p.m.
