Women's Hockey Ties Nationally-Ranked Yellowjackets

EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (Blugolds.com) – Playing in the first conference game of the season, the UW-Eau Claire women's hockey team tied fifth-ranked UW-Superior 2-2 in overtime at Hobbs Ice Center tonight.

Hadley Cookson (So.-Shorewood, Minn./Minnetonka) got the Blugolds on the board in the opening period at 15:29 with an assist from Amanda Kane (Jr.-Maplewood, Minn./North St. Paul).

Eau Claire led at the end of the first period but Superior fought back and scored two goals in the second period to take a 2-1 lead. The first Superior goal came on an empty-net. With no goalie in-net for Eau Claire on a delayed penalty, a Blugold pass wasn't handled properly and it went into the Blugolds' goal. Superior goalie Shanley Peters was credited with the goal as she was the last Yellowjacket to touch the puck.

In the third period at 6:38, Ashley Baugher (So.-Crystal Lake, Ill./Central) scored her first goal of the season to tie the game up at two apiece. Nikki Kothenbeutel (Sr.-Sauk Rapids, Minn./Sauk Rapids-Rice) got the assist on the game-tying goal.

Superior outshot the Blugolds 19-2 in the opening period and finished the game with 48 shots to 19 for Eau Claire. Paige Turner (So.-Iron River, Wis./Duluth East) stopped 46 Yellowjacket shots, playing all but six seconds of the game.

The Blugolds are now 1-2-2 overall and 0-0-1 in the WIAC while Superior is 3-0-2 on the season and 0-0-1 in conference play. It was the Yellowjackets' second straight tie.

Saturday the Blugolds will be at UW-Superior to face the Yellowjackets at 7 p.m.
