Blugolds Shutout by Saints

EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (Blugolds.com) — Coming off a 2-2 tie with St. Scholastica (Minn.) on Friday night, the two teams met again Saturday afternoon at Hobbs Ice Center. The Saints got on the board first and never looked back, and the UW-Eau Claire women's hockey team fell 4-0 in their first loss this season.

The Saints (1-0-1) struck first at 9:48 of the first period on a power-play goal. In the second period, the Blugolds (0-1-1) controlled the play offensively for the majority of the period. But it was the Saints that got on the board with a late goal at 16:37.

It was another power-play goal at 7:25 of the third period that put the game out of the reach for the Blugolds. The Saints tallied one more at 14:44 and held on the rest of the way to preserve the shutout.

Paige Turner (So.-Iron River, Wis./Duluth East) was busy in goal once again for the Blugolds, turning away 29 shots. The story of the game was special teams, as the Saints took advantage of the power-play, going 2-for-4. The Blugolds, on the other-hand, were 0-for-2 on the day.

Shots were relatively even, but UW-Eau Claire finished with just three in the third period and 24 in the game. They put up 14 shots in the second period, but could not solve the Saints' goaltender.

The Blugolds will play a home-and-home series next weekend with St. Catherine (Minn.) starting Friday night at 7:30 p.m. on the road. They will host St. Catherine then on Saturday at Hobbs with the game set to start at 2 p.m.
