Women's Basketball downs Pioneers

EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (blugolds.com)- The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire women's basketball team defeated UW-Platteville Saturday afternoon, 73-58.

Anna Graaskamp (Sr.-Eau Claire, WI/Memorial) began the scoring for the Blugolds, who would finish the first quarter with a 14-10 lead. Graaskamp would have half of those points, finishing the quarter with seven.

Platteville re-took the lead within the first few minutes of the second, taking it into halftime 33-29. Graaskamp was again the leading scorer in the quarter, totaling six points.

A three from Hallee Hoeppner (Sr.-Winona, MN) helped Eau Claire strike first in the second half. She also helped the Blugolds wrestle back the lead, scoring five straight points to make it 41-40. UWEC finished the period with a 49-43 lead.

A strong shooting fourth helped Eau Claire finish off the Pioneers. The Blugolds shot 60 percent from the field in the quarter, while making both three-pointers they attempted.

The Blugolds shot well from downtown all afternoon, going 7-15 from behind the three-point line. They also went 14-15 from the free throw line.

Graaskamp would end up as the leading scorer with 16 points, while Hoeppner supplied 15. Off the bench, Jessie Ruden (Fr.-Rochester, MN/John Marshall) added 14, and Megan Baer (Fr.-Apple Valley, MN) went 4-4 from three.

Now 7-6 overall and 2-1 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, Eau Claire gets UW-Oshkosh next, on the road. That game will be Wednesday, January 15th, and will tip off at 7 PM.
