Blugolds Never Trail, Win Big Against Carroll

Blugolds Never Trail, Win Big Against Carroll

It was a showcase of the Blugolds' potential.

Despite their most lethal weapon—the three-point shot—hitting only sporadically, the UW-Eau Claire women's basketball team was able to claim a 66-51 victory over Carroll University Saturday in their brief reprieve from conference play.

Box Score | Coach Englund's recap

After rushing out to an 8-0 lead to start the game, the Blugolds held off a tough Carroll team to claim a 10-point lead at half time. They would never trail in the game.

Despite Carroll's pressuring defense, which at times proved effective when Eau Claire worked the ball into the corner, the Blugolds displayed excellent ball movement.

They were able to capitalize on Carroll's love of double teams, passing out to open three-point shooters, or lobbing the ball into the paint, where the Blugolds' height advantage led to high percentage shots.

While the three-ball did not fall with the Blugolds' normal consistency (30 percent), the threat forced Carroll to close out on perimeter shooters, opening up the paint.

That is where Eau Claire found its greatest success.

The Blugolds used an immense height advantage to shoot over a smaller Carroll team—Carroll has no players over six feet on their roster, Eau Claire has five.

Eau Claire ended up accounting for 24 points in the paint, while contesting every shot their opponents mustered from the area.

Rachel Egdorf (Sr. Mishicot, Wis.) led the way for the Blugolds, tallying 11 points and finishing one rebound short of a double-double.

Courtney Lewis (Prairie Du Chien, Wis.) continued to be the all-around force she has been all season, adding 10 points, eight assists and seven rebounds, while Ellen Blacklock (So. Winona, Minn.) and Arien Becker (So.-Hayward, WI) chipped in eight points each.

The Blugolds (5-5, 1-2 WIAC) have a break until the travel to Texas to play McMurry (Texas) Dec. 29 at 7 p.m.
