Women’s Basketball Suffers First Loss, 71-62

EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (blugolds.com) – The UW-Eau Claire women's basketball team suffered their first loss of the season Tuesday night, falling to Saint Mary's 71-62 at Zorn Arena.

The Blugolds controlled most of the first half, building leads as large as 13, but the Cardinals scored the last five points of the second half to even the score at 29 heading into the locker room.

UWEC started the second half strong, maintaining the lead for the first 12 minutes of the half. But Saint Mary's came charging back, thanks to several three's to spark their comeback.

Several Blugold fouls down the stretch translated into points for the Cardinals and SMU shot an impressive 57 percent from behind the arc. Free throws also proved to be a factor as the Cardinals were six for eight from the charity stripe in the minute of the game as the Blugolds lost by a final score of 71-62.

UWEC's Teenie Lichtfuss (Jr.-Oshkosh, WI) led all scorers with 14 points. Teammate Madison Johnson (Jr.-Oseola, WI) added 13 points and a game-high nine rebounds.

The Blugolds will host Winona State on Saturday, November 22 in Zorn Arena. Tip-off is set for 3 p.m.
