Women's Basketball Narrowly Falls at Wartburg

WAVERLY, Iowa (Blugolds.com) - For the second time in as many Saturdays, the UW-Eau Claire women's basketball team fell victim to a late opposing comeback on the road, this time at the hands of Wartburg College.

The Knights erased an eight-point second half deficit and knocked three free throws in the final minute to edge the Blugolds 60-58.

In the first half, Eau Claire found itself down 11 early before closing the half on a 23-10 run to storm into the locker room with a 33-31 lead. Teenie Lichtfuss (So.-Oshkosh, Wis./Lourdes) scored 10 points in that stretch, including her two 3-pointers of the game. Lichtfuss ended the game with a double-double, scoring 18 points while collecting 10 rebounds.

The Blugolds built on the momentum from the end of the first half and carried it into the second. They were up 48-40 with just under 11 minutes left to play after Madison Johnson (So.-Osceola, Wis.) sunk a pair of free throws. Then, the Knights closed out the game on a 20-10 run to extend Eau Claire's losing streak to three games.

Kristin Sahr (Jr.-Stillwater, Minn.) came off the bench to score her season-high 16 points. Courtney Lewis (Jr.-Prairie du Chien, Wis.) also recorded a double-double by scoring 10 points and pulling down 11 rebounds.

Eau Claire drops to 1-5 overall while Wartburg improves to 4-1.

The Blugolds will head to UW-Stevens Point on Wednesday night to take on the Pointers at 7 p.m. in Berg Gym for the first conference game of the season.
