Softball records two more wins in Florida

CLERMONT, Florida (Blugolds.com) – The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire softball team tallied two more wins on Tuesday, defeating Miami-Hamilton (OH) and St. Olaf College (MN).

In their first game of the day against Miami-Hamilton, Eau Claire took a 5-0 lead after two innings. The Harriers cut the lead with three runs in the bottom of the third, but the Blugolds would add another run in the fourth and a final run in the seventh to take the 7-3 win.

Gretchen Arneson (Jr. – Chippewa Falls, WI/Chi-Hi) got things going in the first, doubling to right field to plate the first run of the game. Katelyn Yute (So. – North Prairie, WI/Kettle Moraine) followed with a single to score Arneson and Cheyenne Johnson (Jr. – Poplar, WI/Northwestern) doubled to center to add the third run.

In the second inning, Katie Rongstad (Jr. – Slinger, WI) recorded a 2-RBI single to left but the Harriers used four hits in the third to tally three runs of their own.

Eau Claire picked up their sixth run in the fourth inning after pinch runner Evie Barczak (Fr. – Minnetonka, MN/Hopkins) stole third and then scored on a throwing error by the catcher. The seventh and final run came via an RBI-single by Arneson in the seventh.

 Madison Morris (So. – Caledonia, IL/North Boone) earned her first win of the season in the circle, striking out two and walking one while Morgan Sivak (So. – Oconomowoc, WI) went the final four frames, also striking out two.

After being named WIAC Pitcher of the Week earlier in the day, Sarah Peka (Jr. – Chanhassen, MN/Minnetonka) tossed a shutout against St. Olaf, giving up just two hits while striking out five as the Blugolds defeated the Oles 6-0.

The Blugolds jumped to an early 4-0 lead with a run in the first and three in the second. Eau Claire took advantage of a pair of hit batters in the top of the first and would score on a two-out RBI double by Yute.

In the second, an RBI triple by Rongstad added another run and two more followed on a two-out St. Olaf error. Arneson added a two-out, two-run double for the Blugolds in the top of the sixth to provide the final two runs of the game.

The Blugolds (8-2) will face Thmoas College (Maine) and St. Catherine on Wednesday before finishing their spring trip with games against the University of Chicago and Oberlin on Friday. Follow the action on  Blugold Game Day or on the 'UWEC Blugolds' app' on your mobile device.
