Blugolds dominate Pioneers

EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (Blugolds.com) – The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire softball swept UW-Platteville 7-0 and 10-0 Saturday, ending conference play with two wins on Alumni Day.

The Blugolds were in control from start to finish on Saturday, out-hitting the Pioneers 20-4 on the day. In game one, Evie Schaller (Sr.-Chippewa Falls, WI/Chi-Hi), Brooke Varian (So.-Madison, WI/West) and Rachel Heffel (Sr.-Racine, WI/Case) each recorded two hits, highlighted by Varian's homerun blast in the third inning.

Lauren Blasczyk (Sr.-Appleton, WI/East) earned the shutout win on the mound, striking out seven and giving up only two hits and did not issue a walk.

In game two, Eau Claire jumped out early, scoring five runs in the first, which included a two-run double by Sam Noetzelman (Sr.-Delano, MN). The Blugolds added four more in the second inning with one swing as Schaller cleared the bases with a grand slam. Eau Claire would tack on one more run in the fourth to cruise to the 10-0 win.

Schaller led the way at the plate in game two, going 3-for-3 with a homerun and four RBIs. Leah Wolff (Sr.-Middleton, WI) and Tayler Mort (So.-Zumbrota, MN/Zumbrota-Mazeppa) were also a perfect 2-for-2.

Sarah Peka (Fr.-Chanhassen, MN/Minnetonka) earned the win in the circle, giving up one hit while striking out two in three innings of work. Cheyenne Johnson (Fr.-Poplar, WI/Northwestern) tossed two innings in relief, striking out four.

The Blugolds (27-9, 8-6 WIAC) will finish the regular season on home on Tuesday, May 2 as they host Saint Mary's University. Follow the action on Blugold Game Day.
