Blugolds compete in day 1 of NCAA Championship

LA CROSSE, Wis. (Blugolds.com) – The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire outdoor track and field teams competed in day one of the NCAA Division III Championships on Thursday, with Erica Oawster (Jr. – Lino Lakes, MN/Centennial) leading the Blugolds with a national runner-up finish in the discus.

Oawster's second place finish came from a throw of 49.56m (162-07). Also turning in a strong performance was Samantha Slattery (Jr. – Waunakee, WI), who finished ninth in the 10K, just missing the podium with a time of 36:43.01.

The 4x100 relay team of Amy Chen (Fr. – Fr. – Mayville, WI), Kelsey Worachek (Sr. – Appleton, WI/Xavier), Ashleigh Buergi (Sr. – Green Bay, WI/Bay Port) and Tommie Brenner (Jr. – Reedsburg, WI) took 15th in the prelims, finishing with a time of 47.99.

The men's 4x400 relay team of Jordan Lijewski (Fr. – Roseville, MN/Roseville Area), KJ Munn (So. – Bayport, MN/St. Croix Prep), Kyle Groven (So. – Pine Island, MN), and Brandon Christnovich (Jr. – Holmen, WI) finished 10th in the prelims, clocking in at 3:14.22, while the women's squad of Buergi, Lakyn Kummer (So. - Medford, WI), Sasha Riley (So. Fairmont, MN) and Brenner were 16th (3:56.07).

In the women's 400m hurdles, Buergi finished 14th with a time of 1:03.22 and in the men's discus, David Kornack (Jr. – Edgar, WI) was 20th with a throw of 41.26m (135-04).

Michael Amerlan (So. – Itasca, IL/Lake Park West) is in 17th place after the first day of the decathlon, finishing the day with 3195 points. He was second in the 100m (11.49) and seventh in the 400m (50.89), tied for 17th in the high jump (1.75m, 5-8.75), 18th in the long jump (6.02m, 19-9), and 19th in the discus (10.08m, 33-1).

In the heptathlon, Megan Wallace (Fr. – Burlington, WI) is in seventh place with 2699 points. She finished tied for third in the high jump (1.57m, 5-1.75), eighth in the 200m (26.88), tied for 11th in the shot put (9.98m, 32-9) and 12th in the 100m hurdles (15.73).
