Track and Field finishes strong at WIAC Championship

RIVER FALLS, Wis. (Blugolds.com) – The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire outdoor track and field teams turned in strong performances on the final day of the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Championship (presented by Culver's), with the women's team taking second and the men's finishing in sixth.

The Blugolds claimed titles in six events on Saturday along with five runner-up finishes.

In the heptathlon, Megan Wallace (Fr. – Burlington, WI) was the WIAC champion with 4,574 points. Wallace was first in the long jump (5.52m) and 800m run (2:28.21) and fifth in the javelin (31.39m) on Saturday to earn the top spot on the podium.

The Blugolds dominated the shot put, claiming 21 points in the event. Erica Oawster (Jr. – Lino Lakes, MN/Centennial) won with a throw of 15.11 while JoHannah Theisen (Sr. – Eau Claire, WI/Regis) was second (14.72m) and Kassandra Lueck So. – Green Bay, WI/Ashwaubenon) was sixth (12.50m). Oawster would also win the discus with a throw of 48.82m.

Also turning in a top performance was Ashleigh Buergi (Sr. – Green Bay, WI/Bay Port) who won the 400m hurdles with a time of 1:01.30.

Marin Munos (Fr. – Oswego, IL/Aurora West) was second in the high jump (1.62m) while Jillian Moss (So. 0 Fitchburg, WI/Oregon) tied for seventh (1.57m).

The 4x100 relay team of Amy Chen (Fr. – Fr. – Mayville, WI), Kelsey Worachek (Sr. – Appleton, WI/Xavier), Buergi and Tommie Brenner (Jr. – Reedsburg, WI) took third with a time of 47.95. Brenner also finished third in the 100m hurdles (14.73) while Worachek and Buergi were fourth (12.31) and eighth (12.45) in the 100m. Worachek also earned points in the 200m, taking seventh with a time of 25.81.

In the 1500m run, Mel Becker (Sr. – Osseo, WI/homeschool) clocked in at 4.41.39 to take second while Emma Drangstveit (Fr. – Lakeville, MN/North) and Taylor Lather (Sr. – Stillwater, MN/St. Croix Prep) were seventh (4:51.38) and eighth (4:51.52), respectively. Becker would also make the podium in the 800, finishing fifth (2:17.04) with Sara Moen (Fr. - Blaine, MN/Centennial) taking eighth (2.20.11).

Glory Hecker (So. - Stone Lake, WI/Hayward Center) was fifth in the 400m (58.21) while Lakyn Kummer (So. - Medford, WI) was eighth (1:00.10) and teammates Callie Fischer (Sr. – Oneida, WI/Ashwaubenon) and Lizzy Cisewski (Fr. – Stevens Point, WI/Pacelli) were fifth and sixth in the 5,000m with times of 18:35.23 and 18:36.50, respectively.

The 4x400 relay team of Kummer, Rosalie Campbell (So. – Germantown, WI), Sasha Riley and Hecker finished in second place with a time of 3:59.04.

For the men, David Kornack (Jr. – Edgar, WI) took the top spot on the podium in the shot put (17.34m) and took third place in the discus with a toss of 50.66m.

In the decathlon, Michael Amerlan (So. – Itasca, IL/Lake Park West) finished second overall with 6,396 points. Amerlan was second in the 110 hurdles (16.00) and discus (34.01m), third in the javelin (48.85m), fourth in the pole vault (4m) and fifth in the 1500m (4:53.94) on Saturday.

Alex Schutt (Jr. – Cameron, MN) was third in the triple jump (14.18m) while the 4x100 relay team of Adam Lembke (Fr. – Waukesha, WI/West), Brandon Christnovich (Jr. – Holmen, WI), Kyle Groven (So. – Pine Island, MN) and KJ Munn (So. – Bayport, MN/St. Croix Prep) placed fifth (42.16).

Munn also took second in the 400m (48.00) while Dietrich Schwoerer (So. – McFarland, WI) was third (48.18). Munn would also earn a point for the Blugolds in the 200m, placing eighth (22.29).

Brendon Paucek (Sr. – Sullivan, WI/Jefferson) was eighth in the 1500m (3:58.95) while Eau Claire ended the meet with a win in the 4x400 as Schwoerer, Christnovich, Groven and Munn turned in a time of 3:14.10 to take first place.
