Blugolds break two records on opening day of WIAC Championships

BROWN DEER, Wis. (Blugolds.com) – After day one of the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Swimming and diving Championships (presented by Culver's), both University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire squads are in second place.

The Blugold women tallied 253 points on Thursday and trail UW-La Crosse by a single point. The men earned 169 points on the day while UW-Stevens Point is in the lead with 207.

Eau Claire swept the 400 medley relays, with the women's team of Jessica Wilson (So. – Brookfield, WI/Wauwatosa West), Sam Senczyszyn (Sr. – Grafton, WI), Anna Egli (So. – Mankato, MN/West) and Brittany Farr (Sr. – Madison, WI/James Madison Memorial) turning in a winning time of 3:53.61. The men's squad of Michael Bylander (Fr. – Baxter, MN/Brainerd), Collin Miller (Jr. – Rochester, MN/Schaeffer Academy), Andrew Strauch (Sr. – Lakeville, MN/North) and Caleb Odmark (Sr. – White Bear Lake, MN) broke the school record by three seconds with a time 3:20.85.

Miller set another record in the 200 IM, breaking his own conference mark with a time of 1:48.76. Senczyszyn also took an individual title, winning the 50 Free with a time of 23.43.

Paige Pelikan (Fr. – New Berlin, WI/West) also had a strong day for Eau Claire, placing second in the 500 Free (5:08.42) while the women's 200 free relay team of Senczyszyn, Emily Ries (So. – Eau Claire, WI/Memorial), Olivia Hanzak (So. – Crystal, MN/Robbinsdale Armstrong) and Farr took second place by just .01, clocking in at 1:30.40.

The Blugolds will start Friday's prelims at 10 a.m. with the finals session beginning at 6:30 p.m.
