Men’s Hockey Falls at Seventh-Ranked Stevens Point

STEVENS POINT, Wis. (Blugolds.com) – The 14th-ranked UW-Eau Claire men's hockey team held seventh-ranked UW-Stevens Point scoreless after the first period but two early second period goals were too much to overcome as the Blugolds lost to the Pointers 3-0 here tonight at K.B. Willet Arena.

The Blugolds are 4-3-2 overall and 0-1-0 in the WIAC while the Pointers improve at 7-2-0 overall and 1-0-0 in conference play.  Stevens Point, the pre-season pick to win the WIAC, is currently ranked seventh in the lastest USCHO.com NCAA Division III National Poll.

Eau Claire withstood an aggressive Stevens Point offensive attack that saw the Pointers outshoot the Blugolds 16-5 in the first period.  Tied 0-0 starting the second period the Pointers scored two early goals at 1:38 and 3:03 to take a 2-0 lead.  Stevens Point added an insurance goal in the third period extending their lead to 3-0. 

Goalie Tyler Green (Jr.-Noblesville, IN) played well in defeat saving 34 shots.  His season record now stands at 3-1-1.

Overall the Pointers outshot the Blugolds 37-22.  Eau Claire was whistled for four penalties while Stevens Point was called for two infractions on the night.  Neither team scored a power play goal as they went a combined 0-for-4.

The Blugolds return to Hobbs Ice Center tomorrow evening where they will face UW-Superior.  The Yellowjackets lost to fifth-ranked and undefeated UW-River Falls 1-0 on December 5.  Face-off is set for 7:00 p.m.
