Men’s Hockey Battles St. John’s to a Tie

ST. CLOUD, Minn. (Blugolds.com) – The 10th-ranked UW-Eau Claire men's hockey team came back twice from one-goal deficits to eventually tie St. John's University 3-3 in overtime here today at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center.

The Blugolds' record now stands at 1-0-1 on the season while the Johnnies go to 2-0-2 on the year.  It was the first-ever tie between both schools.  Eau Claire owns a 14-5-1 advantage all-time against St. John's.

Forward Ross Andersen (Sr.-River Falls, WI) was the first to light the lamps scoring his first goal of the season at 8:30 of the first period assisted by Patrick Moore (So.-Grand Rapids, MN) and Jack Callahan (Sr.-Red Bank, NJ/Christian Brothers Academy) giving the Blugolds a 1-0 lead.

The Johnnies scored goals in the second period at 7:29 and 9:38 to take a 2-1 lead.  The Blugolds answered the Johnny run when Brandon Wahlin (So.-St. Paul, MN/White Bear Lake) scored his second goal of the season assisted by Andersen and Adam Knochenmus (So.-Roseau, MN) forcing a 2-2 tied entering the second intermission.

St. John's took a 3-2 lead scoring at 6:46 of the third period and Eau Claire once again answered as Andersen scored his second goal of the game short-handed at 8:43 assisted again by Moore and Callahan to tie the game at 3-3 forcing overtime.

In the extra session neither team scored a goal as St. John's fired four shots and Eau Claire took one shot.  No penalties were called in overtime.

The Johnnies outshot the Blugolds 33-26.  Both teams were unable to score on the power play as Eau Claire went 0-for-3 and St. John's went 0-for-4.

Goalie Jay Deo (So.-Langley, BC) played all 65 minutes saving 30 shots in his first start of the season.

The Blugolds will play at Hobbs Ice Center for the first time this coming weekend when they host Hamline University on Friday, November 14.  Face off is set for 7:00 p.m.
