Men's Hockey Completes Weekend Sweep of Rival Stout

MENOMONIE, Wis. (Blugolds.com) – The name of the game when the UW-Eau Claire men's hockey team met up with UW-Stout for the second time this weekend was the power-play. The Blugolds scored two goals with the man advantage, while the Blue Devils added one of their own. But it was UW-Eau Claire that came out on top again, this time 3-1 at Dunn County Recreation Center in Menomonie.

The Blugolds (14-4-1, 3-2-1) struck first for the second straight night when David Donnellan (Sr.-Eau Claire, Wis./Memorial) found the back of the net at the 16-minute minute mark of the first period on the power-play. David Henry (Fr.-Foster City, Cal./Junipero Serra) and Patrick Moore (Fr.-Grand Rapids, Minn./Grand Rapids) assisted on the goal.

The second period was more eventful for both teams. The Blugolds started the scoring again, this time just 48 seconds into the period. Niko Kapetanovic (Sr.-North Prairie, Wis./Kettle Moraine) picked up the second power-play goal of the night for UW-Eau Claire. Ross Andersen (Jr.-River Falls, Wis./River Falls) and Moore assisted on the goal.

UW-Eau Claire extended the lead at 8:47 when Moore picked up his third point of the night with his first goal after picking up two assists. Henry added his second assist of the night and Alex Olson (Sr.-Devils Lake, N.D./Devils Lake) also added a helper on the goal.

Down 3-0, the Blue Devils (6-13-0, 2-4-0) finally solved UW-Eau Claire goaltender Tyler Green (So.-Noblesville, Ind./Noblesville) with a power-play goal at 13:27. It was the first, and only goal the Blue Devils could muster this weekend against the Blugolds.

Neither team was able to get on the board in the third period, and the game came to an end with the Blugolds once again picking up the win in the I-94 rivalry.

Green finished the game with 32 saves on 33 shots as the Blue Devils held the edge in shots, 33-28. Both teams finished with six penalties each. The Blugolds were 2-for-5 with the man-advantage and the Blue Devils were 1-for-4.

With the win, the Blugolds have now won five-straight games against the Blue Devils. The two teams will finish up their season series Thursday, Feb. 20 at Hobbs Ice Center.

The Blugolds will be back in action Friday, Feb. 7 at Hobbs when they welcome UW-Superior for a two-game set. Both games, Friday and Saturday, are scheduled for 7 p.m.
