Men's Hockey Comes Away With 2-2 Tie Against Yellowjackets

SUPERIOR, Wis. (Blugolds.com) — Coming off a loss in the WIAC opener at home on Friday night, the UW-Eau Claire men's hockey team looked to rebound Saturday night when they traveled to Superior for another conference matchup. Both teams scored twice in the first period, and that was all the scoring the rest of the way as they battled to a 2-2 tie.

The Blugolds (5-3-1, 0-1-1) struck first at the 5:08 mark with a goal from Ethan Nauman (So.-Mosinee, Wis./Mosinee) and assists from Ross Andersen (Jr.-River Falls, Wis./River Falls) and Alex Olson (Sr.-Devils Lake, N.D./Devils Lake).

Less than two minutes later the Blugolds struck again, this time it was Chris Fischer (Fr.-Apple Valley, Minn./Apple Valley) with an unassisted goal at 6:56 of the first period.

But the Yellowjackets (4-6-1, 0-1-1) had their own rally at the end of the period to even things up. At 17:59 UW-Superior cut the lead in half with a power-play goal. Just 28 seconds later, they struck again, this time with an even strength goal to send the teams to the intermission tied at 2-2.

The goalies took over in the second period and kept both offenses off the board. Jay Deo (Fr.-Langley, B.C./Langley) made his third start of the season in net for the Blugolds and made 24 saves on 26 shots. The Blugolds put 27 shots on UW-Superior goalie Drew Strandberg, who finished with 25 saves.

Both teams were whistled for five penalties, but the Yellowjackets were the only team to break through with the man-advantage.

The Blugolds are back in action next weekend when they travel to Milwaukee to take on MSOE for a 7:05 p.m. tilt on Friday night. Saturday, they will play Lawrence on the road at 7 p.m. It will be the final two games for UW-Eau Claire before the break.
