Five Blugolds Named WIAC Athletes of the Week

MADISON, Wis. (Blugolds.com) – Five UW-Eau Claire student-athletes have been named Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Athletes of the Week, WIAC Assistant Commissioner for Media Relations Matt Stanek announced today.

Selected this week were men's hockey player Jon Waggoner (Sr.-Fairbanks, Alaska/Lathrop), men's swimmer Aaron Lickel (Sr.-Madison, Wis./East), men's diver Shawn Westphal (So.-Eau Claire, Wis./North), women's swimmer Maggie Reilly (Sr.-St. Michael, Minn./St. Michael-Albertville) and women's diver Amanda Baker (So.-Hudson, Wis.).

In two games during the week, Waggoner scored four goals and picked up one assist as the No. 1-ranked Blugolds split.  Against No. 2-ranked St. Norbert College on Nov. 22, a game the Blugolds lost 5-2, Waggoner scored both goals, one in the second period and one in the third.  In a 7-0 victory over Concordia University (Wis.) on Nov. 23, he scored the eventual game-winner less than eight minutes into the contest on a power-play, and two minutes later assisted on a short-handed goal to give the Blugolds a 2-0 lead.  Just over two minutes before the end of the first period, he found the back of the net again for his fourth goal of the year and the Blugolds' fourth goal of the game.  He is now tied for first place on the team with eight points this season.

Facing UW-River Falls and UW-Oshkosh on Nov. 23, Lickel won two individual events, while taking first and second as part of two relay teams to help the Blugolds to a win.  Lickel took first in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 22.60 and was first in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 49.85, both season best times.  He and his teammates won the 200-yard freestyle relay with a time of 1:28.61 and took second in the 200-yard medley relay with a time of 1:41.87.

Westphal won both diving events as the Blugolds defeated UW-Oshkosh and UW-River Falls on Nov. 23.  He took first in the three-meter dive with a score of 192.45 and won the one-meter with 210.45 points.

In two different meets during the week, Reilly picked up three victories.  On Nov. 22 against Minnesota State University-Moorhead, she won the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 1:01.76 and was second in the 50-yard butterfly with a time of 27.96 and in the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 2:20.04.  Against the UW-Eau Claire Invitational on Nov. 23, Reilly won the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 2:20.69 and took first in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 1:01.92.  She also swam on two relay teams that took third and fourth places.

Competing in four events in two different meets during the week, Baker claimed first place three times and was second one other time, while finishing with three national qualifying marks.  Against Minnesota State University-Moorhead on Nov. 22, she won the one-meter dive with 261.05 points and won the three-meter with 265.55 points.  At the UW-Eau Claire Invitational on Nov. 23, Baker took first in the one-meter dive with 267.60 points and scored 245.15 in the three-meter to take second.
