Men's Hockey Rebounds with 7-0 Victory Over Concordia

MEQUAN, Wis. (Blugolds.com) — Coming off their first loss of the season, the UW-Eau Claire men's hockey team rebounded in a big way Saturday night with a 7-0 victory over Concordia.

The Blugolds (5-1-0) scored four goals in the first period, including a power-play goal and a shorthanded goal. Jon Waggoner (Sr.-Fairbanks, Alaska/Lathrop) picked up where he left off on Friday night with his first goal of the night. It was a power-play goal and Jeff Pauluk (So.-Bloomington, Minn./Jefferson) and Alex Olson (Sr.-Devils Lake, N.D./Devils Lake) picked up assists.

Just over two minutes later, Brian Nehring (Sr.-Hopedale, Mass./Milford) notched a shorthanded goal with an assist from Waggoner. Charles Thauwald (So.-Rochester, Minn./Mayo) gave the Blugolds a three-goal lead with his first goal of the night at 14:43 of the first. Daniel Olszewski (Sr.-Janesville, Wis./Craig) and Pauluk picked up assists on the goal. At 17:41, Waggoner picked up his second goal of the game with an assist from Olson to cap off the scoring in the first period.

UW-Eau Claire got a goal at 14:13 of the second period from Thauwald. It was his second of the game and the only goal of the period. Olszewski and Joe Krause (Jr.-Hermantown, Minn./Hermantown) picked up helpers on the goal.

At 4:48 of the final period, Krause got in on the scoring action with his only goal of the night on an assist from Thauwald. Jason Eddy (Fr.-Woodbury, Minn./Woodbury) finished the scoring at 18:10 of the third period with assists from Olson and Adam Knochenmus (Fr.-Roseau, Minn./Roseau).

Jay Deo (Fr.-Langley, B.C./Langley) notched the shutout in just his second career start in goal, making 29 saves to improve to 2-0 this season. The Blugolds finished with a slight edge in shots 32-29. They were 1-for-2 on the power-play while Concordia finished 0-for-6 with the man-advantage.

The Blugolds will be back in action Wednesday night when they welcome St. Norbert to town in a rematch of Friday night's game in De Pere. The Green Knights handed UW-Eau Claire their first loss of the season, a 5-2 defeat. The game is scheduled to start at 7 p.m. on Wednesday night at Hobbs Ice Center.
