Three Blugolds Earn WIAC Athlete of the Week Honors

MADISON, Wis. (Blugolds.com) – Three UW-Eau Claire student-athletes have been named Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Athletes of the Week, WIAC Assistant Commissioner for Media Relations Matt Stanek announced today.

Selected this week were men's diver Nick Badilla (Sr.-Appleton, Wis./North), women's diver Amanda Baker (Fr.-Hudson, Wis.) and men's hockey player Daniel Olszewski (Jr.-Janesville, Wis./Craig).

Badilla won both the one and three-meter dives as the Blugolds competed against UW-River Falls and UW-Oshkosh at home on Nov. 17.  He won the one-meter event with 291.55 points, a national qualifying mark, and took first in the three-meter with a score of 313.45.  As a team, the Blugolds defeated both the Titans and Falcons.

Baker picked up four wins during the weekend as the Blugolds competed at home twice.  On Nov. 16 against Minnesota State University-Moorhead, she won the three-meter dive with a score of 252.45 and the one-meter with a mark of 240.25.  On Nov. 17, facing MSU-Moorhead, UW-River Falls and UW-Oshkosh, Baker took the top spot in the three-meter with a score of 261.00 and was first in the one-meter with 252.40 points.  The marks she achieved were the highest of the season.

Olszewski helped the Blugolds remain unbeaten on the season (7-0-1) as he scored three of the Blugolds' eight goals against No. 3-ranked St. Norbert College (Wis.).  In a 5-3 win for UW-Eau Claire on Nov. 16, Olszewski got the Blugolds on the board in the second period at 1:41 to bring the Blugolds within one goal.  The Blugolds then scored two more to take a 3-2 lead and never trailed the rest of the night.  In a 3-3 overtime tie on Nov. 17, Olszewski again scored the Blugolds' first goal of the night at 9:51 in the first period to tie the score and then scored again at 6:59 in the second to tie the game at 2-2.  Picking up three points during the weekend, the Blugolds are now in first place in the NCHA with a 5-0-1 record.  This is the first time since 1982 the Blugolds haven't lost a game through their first eight to start the year, and it was the first time since 1995 St. Norbert didn't win at least one game of a weekend series against UW-Eau Claire.
