Blugolds Outlast Pipers in a Nail-Biter

VANDAIS HEIGHTS, Minn. (Blugolds.com) – The UW-Eau Claire men's hockey team beat out the Hamline Pipers (Minn.) 5-4 in the Blugolds first away match of the season, bringing the team's overall record to 3-0-0. 

It was a scoring battle between the two teams, in which five different players scored for the Blugolds.  Daniel Olszewski (Jr.-Janesville, Wis./Craig) scored the first goal for the Blugolds to tie the game in the first period.

In the second period, the Blugolds found strength in their power-play offense, scoring two power-play goals within three minutes of each other.

After the high scoring second period, the Blugolds led 4-3 going into the third period.  Both teams scored one goal in the third period. 

The Blugolds had 27 shots to Hamline's 19 shots in the game.  Jon Waggoner (Jr.-Fairbanks, Alaska/Lathrop) led the Blugolds with five shots.  The Blugolds also had 10 assists to their five goals, with Devin Mantha (Sr.-Sturgeon Falls, Ontario/Ann Arbor Pioneer) leading the team with two assists.

The Blugolds' keeper Brandon Stephenson (Sr.- Saline, Mich.), played the full sixty minutes of the game, and stopped 15 of Hamline's 19 shots on goal. 

The Blugolds' next match will be played against the Bethel Royals (Minn.) on Saturday.  The game will be played at Bethel and will start at 7 p.m.
