2014-15 UWEC Athletes of the Week - Week 30 (April 6-12)

Softball

Pitcher:  Lauren Blasczyk, Pitcher, Sophomore, Appleton, WI/East
Blasczyk had a huge weak for the Blugolds going 3-0 defeating three separate conference schools this past week.  In a 12-0 win at rival UW-Stout Blasczyk scattered four hits over seven innings striking out two Blue Devil batters.  In a 9-0 shutout victory at UW-Oshkosh Blasczyk again pitched seven scoreless innings allowing just two hits while striking out eight Titan batters.  The game marked the first time this season Oshkosh had been shutout in a game and also ended the Titans’ 10-game winning streak.  In a 2-0 victory at 11th-ranked UW-Whitewater Blasczyk continued to blank her opponent pitching seven more scoreless innings allowing five hits while striking out five.  In three starts Blasczyk pitched 21 scoreless innings allowing 11 hits, eight singles and three doubles, with 15 strikeouts against zero walks while posting an earned run average of 0.00.

Position:  Amanda Fischer, Outfielder/Catcher, Senior, Wausau, WI/West
Fisher posted big numbers at the plate for the Blugolds going 5-1 in six WIAC road games this past week including a sweep at 11th-ranked UW-Whitewater.  In a 5-2 victory at UW-Stout Fischer went two-for-four from the plate including a solo home run and one stolen base.  In the 12-0 nightcap victory over the Blue Devils Fischer went a perfect two-for-two from the plate including three runs, three walks, two stolen bases and two runs batted in.  Fischer was key in the Blugolds’ 9-0 win at UW-Oshkosh going three-of-five from the plate including her second home run of the week while scoring three runs, recording three runs batted in along with adding one stolen base.  In a 5-2 victory over UW-Whitewater Fischer two-of-three from the plate including two home runs and one double while scoring two runs, stole two bases, tallied one run batted in and earning one walk.  For the week Fischer went nine-of-19 (.474) from the plate scoring nine runs, stole seven bases and producing a total of seven runs batted in.  Fischer ended the week with a .842 slugging percentage and an on-base percentage of .615.

Men’s Tennis

Andrew Rust, Freshman, Golden Valley, MN/Hopkins
Rust was a part of two huge victories for the Blugolds who defeated Luther College 5-4 in a thrilling dual meet between both schools.  Rust defeated Sam Cychosz 6-4, 6-2 at No. 3 Singles.  At No. 2 Doubles Rust and teammate Will Weyenberg defeated the pairing of Quinn Foley and Isaiah Mayerchak 9-8.


Women’s Tennis

Renee Nelson, Senior, Madison, WI/La Follette
Nelson showed strong play in doubles action for the Blugolds who fell to Luther College (IA) 6-3.  At No. 3 Doubles Nelson paired up with teammate Paige Kuepers to defeat Adriana DePaolis and Jackie Cychosz 8-6. 


Men’s Track and Field

Track:  Thurgood Dennis, Sprints, Senior, Allouez, WI/Green Bay Notre Dame
Dennis was the lone Blugold to earn first place honors by winning the 400-meter dash with a time of 48.55 seconds.  It was the first time Dennis has competed in the open 400 this outdoor season and currently ranks as the 12th-fastest time in NCAA Division III this season.


Women’s Track and Field

Field:  Marina Eggen, Jumps, Junior, Greenville, WI/Hortonvile
Eggen placed second in the long jump with a leap of 18-2.5 feet (5.55 meters) at the UW-Platteville Invitational this past weekend.  Her performance currently ranks 10th nationally in the long jump. 

Track:  Lucy Ramquist, Distance, Senior, River Falls, WI
Ramquist competed in the 5,000-meter run on Friday evening at the UW-Platteville Distance Invitational finishing second among NCAA Division III competitors with a time of 16:46.62.  Her time is currently the second-fastest time nationally in the event, just .48 seconds off the top time posted in the nation this year.  Ramquist's time broke the 21-year old school record of 17:08.6 set by Karen Schroenrock on April 7, 1984.
