Three Earn WIAC Athlete of the Week Honors

MADISON, Wis. (Blugolds.com) - UW-Eau Claire men's basketball guard Tyson Kalien (Jr.-Chippewa Falls, WI/Chi-Hi), gymnast Liz Stubbs (Jr.-Wayzata, MN) and men's hockey forward Ross Andersen (Sr.-River Falls, WI) have each been named Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Athletes of the Week, it was announced today by WIAC Assistant Commissioner of Media Relations Matt Stanek.

Kalien continued his hot shooting as the Blugolds won their second consecutive WIAC road game.  In a 75-72 victory at UW-Stout on Jan. 7, Kalien led all scorers with 25 points making nine-of-12 field goal attempts, including a seven-of-nine performance from the three-point line.  Kalien also collected three rebounds and two assists in the victory.  The victory snapped a five-game losing streak to the Blue Devils and was the first Blugold win at Johnson Fieldhouse since Dec. 1, 2007.  Kalien has scored 20 or more points in four of his last six games.

Stubbs got out to a strong start for the Blugolds in two separate competitions.  In a 192.550-183.800 loss to Division I Central Michigan University on Jan. 3, Stubbs scored a 9.700 on the beam, 9.625 on the floor and 9.350 on the vault.  Stubbs posted the highest scores for the beam and floor for the Blugolds against the Chippewas.  At the UW-Eau Claire Invitational on Jan. 9, Stubbs again led the Blugolds, posting team-best scores of 9.700 on the beam and 9.600 on the floor.  Stubbs also earned a 9.250 on the vault.

Andersen helped the Blugolds earn two non-conference victories during the week.  In a 5-3 win over Marian University (Wis.), Andersen scored the eventual game-winning goal (short-handed) at 17:13 of the third period giving the Blugolds a 4-2 lead.  Andersen has scored three of the Blugolds’ four short-handed goals this season.  In a 4-1 win at Augsburg College (Minn.), he again scored the eventual game-winning goal, doing so at 3:41 of the second period, which gave the Blugolds a 2-0 lead.  For the week, Andersen scored two goals, two assists and scored a +3 in both games.  Both goals were game-winners and his +/- score was the highest score by either team in both games.
