2014-15 UWEC Athletes of the Week - Week 9 (Oct. 20-26)

EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (Blugolds.com) - A total of nine UW-Eau Claire student-athletes have been recognized by being named an Athlete of the Week for the ninth week of the 2014-15 season.

Football

Offense: Lars Nelson, Center, 6-4, 321, Junior, Eau Claire, Wis./Memorial

Nelson started at center against UW-River Falls on Saturday, his seventh start this season and 16th consecutive start going back to last season. He has also played in 17 straight games.

Defense: Roger Steen, Nose Guard, 6-1, 280, Senior, Luck, Wis.

Starting against UW-River Falls at nose guard, Steen was second on the team in tackling, finishing the game with eight solo tackles. One of his tackles was for a loss as the Falcons gained only 17 total yards on plays where Steen earned a tackle.


Soccer

Offense: Caroline Henderson, Forward, 5-5, Junior, Duluth, Minn./East

Playing in two games this week, Henderson recorded a goal and an assist as the Blugolds tied once and won once. In a 1-0 victory over UW-Platteville on Saturday, Henderson scored the game’s lone goal with just over 10 minutes to play and the Blugolds hung on for the win to keep the 29-game winning streak over the Pioneers alive. It was her third goal of the season. Wednesday in a 1-1 double overtime tie at the University of St. Thomas (Minn.), she assisted on the Blugolds’ goal that came in the 23rd minute. For the week she finished with five shots, two being on-goal.

Defense: Ashley O’Connell, Defender, 5-6, Junior, Appleton, Wis./East

Playing in two games this week, O’Connell was part of a Blugold defense that gave up just one goal as the Blugolds tied once and won once. Against UW-Platteville on Saturday, a game the Blugolds won 1-0, she and the team allowed just four shots, including only one on-goal. In a 1-1 double overtime tie on Wednesday at the University of St. Thomas (Minn.), the Blugolds defended against 14 shots, five of which were on-goal, and nine corner kicks.


Volleyball

Offense: Alexis Wong, Rightside Hitter, 5-9, Senior, Maple Grove, Minn.

Playing in nine sets in two matches this week, Wong led the Blugolds in kills, averaging 3.11 per set for a total of 28. She finished with a hitting percentage of .256, second-best on the team. Wong had 14 kills against UW-River Falls on Wednesday, a match the Blugolds won 3-2, while also finishing with 14 against Minnesota-Morris on Saturday. For the week, she also had four digs, two block assists and one service ace.

Defense: Juliana Burzynski, Defensive Specialist, 5-5, Junior, Stanley, Wis./Stanley-Boyd

Playing in nine sets in two matches this week, Burzynski was second on the team in digs, averaging four per set for a total of 36. In a 3-2 victory over WIAC opponent UW-River Falls on Wednesday, she finished with 17 digs while totaling 19 against Minnesota-Morris on Saturday.


Men’s Cross Country

Brendon Paucek, Sophomore, Sullivan, Wis./Jefferson

Paucek won the first annual UW-Eau Claire “City Wells” 5,000-meter cross country race, covering the course in a PR 5K cross country time of 15:53, fifteen seconds ahead of the second-place finisher.


Women’s Cross Country

Callie Fischer, Freshman, Oneida, Wis./Ashwaubenon

Fischer won the first annual UW-Eau Claire “City Wells” 5,000-meter cross country race, covering the course in a PR time of 19:41, 1:16 faster than two months earlier when the Blugolds opened the season with a time trial on the exact same course.


Women’s Swimming & Diving

Diving: Amanda Baker, Junior, Hudson, Wis.

Competing against UW-Stevens Point and NCAA Division II St. Cloud State (Minn.) on Friday, Baker won both the one and three-meter dives. She took first in the one-meter with 247.30 points, while winning the three-meter with 259.60.
