2014-15 UWEC Athletes of the Week - Week 5 (Sept. 22-28)

EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (Blugolds.com) - A total of six UW-Eau Claire student-athletes have been recognized by being named an Athlete of the Week for the fifth week of the 2014-15 season.

Men’s Tennis

Singles: Andrew Rust, Freshman, Golden Valley, Minn./Hopkins

Competing at the Midwest Open this weekend at Gustavus Adolphus College (Minn.), Rust advanced to the semifinals. He started his run by defeating Matt Seracki of Hamline 6-0, 6-0, then beat Matt Christensen of St. Olaf 6-1, 6-1, Christian Purrell of Carleton, teammate Michael Mauthe 6-3, 6-2 and Mark Conrad of Carleton 6-3, 7-6 before falling to Christian Beck of St. Olaf in the semifinal 7-6, 6-0.

Doubles: Andrew Rust, Freshman, Golden Valley, Minn./Hopkins & Will Weyenberg, Sophomore, Neenah, Wis.

Competing at the Midwest Open this weekend at Gustavus Adolphus College (Minn.), Rust and Weyenberg went 5-1 advancing to their bracket final.  Rust and Weyenberg defeated Austin Storm and Zach Biggar of Concordia-Moorhead 8-0, Justin Bowman and Seb Lauterbach of UW-Whitewater 8-5, Kolin Kiekhoefer and Bret Lizotte of Bethel 8-6, Simon Brandt and Kevin Krause of UW-La Crosse 8-1 and Colin Shea and Ben Halvorson of Gustavus 8-6 before losing their final match to Mauricio Gonzalez and Kevin Hurley of Carleton 1-6, 6-1, 10-8.


Soccer

Offense: Hannah Schweitzer, Forward, 5-4, Freshman, Rice Lake, Wis.

Playing in two games this week, Schweitzer scored one goal for the Blugolds. Against UW-La Crosse in the WIAC opener on Saturday, Schweitzer scored the game’s first goal less than four minutes before halftime to give the Blugolds a 1-0 lead. But two goals by the Eagles in the second half was enough for La Crosse to defeat the Blugolds 2-1.


Volleyball

Offense: Alexis Wong, Rightside Hitter, 5-9, Senior, Maple Grove, Minn.

Competing in two matches and eight sets this week, Wong led the Blugolds in kills with a total of 27 while also coming away with a .305 hitting percentage. In a 3-0 win at UW-Superior on Friday, Wong recorded 11 kills to lead the match and also had two block assists. Saturday against UW-La Crosse she again led the team in kills with 16, a career-high.


Men’s Golf

Patrick Conroy, Freshman, Stillwater, Minn./Mahtomedi

Conroy led the Blugolds to a third place finish out of 19 teams following three rounds of competition at the Gustavus Twin Cities Classic this weekend. After day one, the Blugolds were in 11th place and Conroy was tied for 33rd but he improved on day two and was tied for 19th place while the team was tied for ninth. On the final day he moved into a tie for eighth place with 223 strokes, six behind the winner, while the Blugolds took third place as a team.
