2014-15 UWEC Athletes of the Week - Week 3 (Sept. 8-14)

EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (Blugolds.com) - A total of nine UW-Eau Claire student-athletes have been recognized by being named an Athlete of the Week for the third week of the 2014-15 season.

Women’s Tennis

Singles: Colleen McCullough, Junior, Maple Grove, Minn./Osseo
Competing in one conference match this week against UW-Stout, which the Blugolds beat 9-0, McCullough won No. 2 singles 6-2, 6-1. She is now 3-1 on the season.

Doubles: Nicole Pothen, Senior, Centerville, Minn./Centennial & Paige Kuepers, Junior, Green Bay, Wis./Southwest
Pothen and Kuepers picked up an 8-1 victory at No. 2 doubles Saturday as the Blugolds defeated conference opponent UW-Stout 9-0. The pair has won three straight.


Soccer

Offense:  Tara Dennehy, Forward, 5-9, Junior, Eugene, Ore./Churchill
With the Blugolds picking up two wins this weekend against opponents from Minnesota, Dennehy scored three goals Saturday to help the Blugolds to a 4-1 win. Facing Gustavus Adolphus College (Minn.), she scored the Blugolds’ first two goals in the opening half and added another goal in the second half. She finished with six shots on the day. Wednesday in a 2-1 win over St. Olaf College (Minn.) she recorded seven shots to lead the team, one of which was on-goal.

Defense:  Megan Hanson, Defender, 5-9, Junior, Verona, Wis./Verona Area
Picking up two wins this week, Hanson was part of a Blugold defense that gave up just 21 shots combined, 14 of which were on-goal. In a 2-1 victory on Wednesday over St. Olaf College (Minn.), the Blugolds allowed just eight shots, four on-goal. Against Gustavus Adolphus College (Minn.) on Saturday, a 4-1 win, they allowed 13 shots, 10 on-goal. Hanson also assisted on one goal against the Gusties.


Volleyball

Offense: Alexis Wong, Rightside Hitter/Setter, 5-9, Senior, Maple Grove, Minn.
Competing in five matches and 16 sets this week, Wong was third on the team with 32 kills and led the Blugolds with a .300 hitting percentage. Her highest kill total came against Alma College (Mich.) on Saturday when she finished with 12. She also had two service aces, tied for fourth most on the team and had 22 digs along with six total blocks (one solo, five assists), second most on the team.

Defense: Kelly Riesgraf, Middle Hitter, 5-11, Junior, Chaska, Minn.
Competing in five matches and 16 sets this week, Riesgraf led the Blugolds with 18 total blocks (three solos, 15 assists), an average of 1.12 per set. She was also fourth on the team with 31 kills, totaling no fewer than five in each match, and had two digs.


Women’s Golf

Kate Engler, Senior, Beloit, Wis./F.J. Turner
Helping lead the Blugolds to a fifth-place finish at the Division III Classic in Lake City, Minn. this weekend, Engler was in ninth place after day one but moved up five spots to tie for fourth with 157 strokes.


Men’s Golf

Joey Dreier, Sophomore, New London, Minn.
Dreier tied for 22nd place after two rounds of competition at the Saint John’s Fall Invitational this weekend in Minnesota. He completed the event with 156 strokes.
