2013-14 UWEC Athletes of the Week - Week 30 (April 14-20)

EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (Blugolds.com) - Nine UW-Eau Claire student-athletes have been recognized by being named an Athlete of the Week for the 30th week of the 2013-14 season.

Softball

Position – Sam Noetzelman, Outfielder, 5-8, Freshman, Delano, Minn.

With the Blugolds picking up two wins Friday over UW-Stevens Point, Noetzelman started both games at designated player. She finished the week with two hits, both doubles that allowed runners to score, and a .500 batting average with two runs, and two RBI to tie a team-high. She had a team-best 1.000 slugging percentage with four total bases and an on-base percentage of .667.

Pitcher – Laura Raflik, Righthanded Pitcher, 5-6, Junior, Plover, Wis./Pacelli

Pitching a complete game Friday in an 8-0 victory in six innings over UW-Stevens Point, Raflik faced 22 batters and struck out four of them while giving up four hits to improve to 7-4 on the season. Through the fourth inning, Raflik was on track for a perfect game but gave up four hits in the final two innings.


Men’s Tennis

Will Weyenberg, Freshman, Neenah, Wis.

Competing three times this weekend, Weyenberg went undefeated in singles, playing in the No. 5 spot. He picked up a 6-3, 7-5 victory Friday, a 6-1, 6-3 win Saturday morning against the Titans and a 6-4, 6-3 win against Whitewater Saturday afternoon. In doubles, Weyenberg and his partner Luke Zwiener won at No. 3 twice, beating La Crosse opponents 8-2 while picking up an 8-4 win against Oshkosh. As a team, the Blugolds finished the weekend 1-2.


Women’s Tennis

Nicole Pothen, Junior, Centerville, Minn./Centennial

Playing in one match this weekend, which the Blugolds won 9-0 over UW-River Falls, Pothen won her No. 6 singles match 6-0, 6-0 while she and partner Paige Kuepers won No. 3 doubles 8-1.


Men’s Golf

Eric Hagstrom, Sophomore, Middleton, Wis.

Hagstrom helped the Blugolds to a second-place finish at the UW-Stout Invitational on Thursday. He completed the one-round event with 76 strokes (+5), tying for seventh place.


Women’s Golf

Kate Engler, Junior, Beloit, Wis./F.J. Turner

With the Blugolds taking second place out of six teams at the Wartburg College Spring Invitational this weekend, Engler, who was tied for second place after the first round, finished with 157 strokes to take second place in the field of 35 golfers.


Men’s Outdoor Track & Field

Field – Roger Steen, Junior, Luck, Wis.

Competing at the Phil Esten Challenge at UW-La Crosse on Friday, Steen finished in third place and was the second-highest collegiate finisher in the shot put with a toss of 17.06 meters (55-11.75), the third best distance in the nation and best in the WIAC so far this year.


Women’s Outdoor Track & Field

Track – Katryna Williams, Sophomore, Watertown, Wis.

Competing at the Phil Esten Challenge at UW-La Crosse on Friday, Williams won the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 11:24.36, more than 21 seconds in front of the rest of the field.

Field – Julia Stedman, Sophomore, Maplewood, Minn./North St. Paul

Competing at the Phil Esten Challenge at UW-La Crosse on Friday, Stedman won the triple jump with a distance of 11.73 meters (38-6), the top mark in the conference and fifth best in the nation so far this season.
