2013-14 UWEC Athletes of the Week - Week 28 (March 31-April 6)

EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (Blugolds.com) - Six UW-Eau Claire student-athletes have been recognized by being named an Athlete of the Week for the 28th week of the 2013-14 season.

Softball

Position – Deanna Gilane, Firstbase, 5-9, Junior, South Milwaukee, Wis.

Starting six games this week, four at first base and two at designated player, Gilane led the Blugolds in hitting with a .588 batting average. She finished the week with 10 hits in 17 at-bats, recording four doubles and a two-run home run, which came in the top of the fifth inning in a 13-7 victory at UW-Platteville on Sunday. Gilane had a team-high eight RBI and also scored five runs, tied for third most on the team. She had a team-high 1.000 slugging percentage with 17 total bases, tied for a team-high, and finished with an on-base percentage of .636, best on the team. In the field, she recorded 30 putouts and had one assist with just two errors for a fielding percentage of .939.


Men’s Tennis

Will Weyenberg, Freshman, Neenah, Wis.

Playing in two singles matches this week, Weyenberg won both to improve to 12-2 on the season. Saturday he won at No. 4 singles 6-0, 6-0 against St. Ambrose University (Iowa) and then picked up the Blugolds’ lone singles win Sunday against NCAA Division II St. Cloud State University (Minn.), taking the No. 5 match 6-4, 7-5. Weyenberg has won 12 straight matches going back to February 7.


Men’s Outdoor Track & Field

Track – Cory White, Junior, Tomah, Wis.

Competing at the Ashton May Invitational at UW-La Crosse on Saturday, where the Blugolds took second place, White won the 200-meter dash with a time of 22.02 seconds.

Field – Roger Steen, Junior, Luck, Wis.

Competing at the Ashton May Invitational at UW-La Crosse on Saturday, where the Blugolds took second place, Steen won the shot put with a toss of 16.77 meters (55-0.25), the top distance in the WIAC and third best distance in the NCAA this season, while taking sixth in the hammer throw with a distance of 49.38 meters (162).


Women’s Outdoor Track & Field

Track – Carly Fehler, Junior, Oak Creek, Wis.

Competing at the Ashton May Invitational at UW-La Crosse on Saturday, where the Blugolds took third place, Fehler was the runner-up in the 100-meter dash with a time of 12.20 seconds, the second best time in the WIAC and fifth best time in the NCAA this season. She also took third in the 200-meter dash with a time of 25.30 seconds.

Field – Sarah Glidden, Freshman, Greenville, Wis./Hortonville

Competing at the Ashton May Invitational at UW-La Crosse on Saturday, where the Blugolds took third place, Glidden took second place in the high jump with a leap of 1.63 meters (5-4.25).
