2013-14 UWEC Athletes of the Week - Week 26 (March 10-23)

EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (Blugolds.com) - Four UW-Eau Claire student-athletes have been recognized by being named an Athlete of the Week for the 26th week of the 2013-14 season.

Softball

Position – Taylor Pierce, Thirdbase, 5-2, Junior, Ashwaubenon, Wis.

Pierce started in 10 games over Spring Break at the Tucson Invitational Games, eight at third base and two as the designated player. Pierce led the Blugolds in hitting, compiling 17 hits in 32 at-bats for a batting average of .531. Six of Pierce’s hits were for extra bases, including four doubles, one triple and one home run. She tied for third on the team with nine RBI and nine runs. Pierce also recorded a team-high slugging percentage of .831 with 26 total bases and led the Blugolds with a .595 on-base percentage. She also stole four bases in five attempts. In the field, Pierce recorded 12 assists with one putout. The Blugolds finished their trip with a 7-3 record.

Pitcher – Emma Wishau, Lefthanded Pitcher, 5-11, Senior, Burlington, Wis./Waterford Union

Wishau made five appearances with four starts in the circle as the Blugolds played in 10 games over Spring Break at the Tucson Invitational Games. Pitching a total of 29.2 innings, Wishau struck out 25 batters and gave up 24 hits, but 13 of those came in her only loss of the week. She gave up just nine total runs, seven of which were earned. Wishau started the week by giving up just five hits and no runs in the first two games, and in the final two games allowed just six hits with two unearned runs. For the week she finished with a 1.65 ERA, making a large improvement over the Blugolds’ opening weekend, March 1-2, where she pitched 4.2 innings over three games and gave up 10 hits and nine runs, seven earned, to complete the week with a 10.50 ERA. For Spring Break, she had a 4-1 record as the Blugolds went 7-3.


Men’s Tennis

Joe Meier, Senior, Hutchinson, Minn.

Helping the Blugolds to a 5-0 record on Spring Break in Hilton Head Island, S.C., Meier was undefeated for the week. He went 4-0 in singles play at No. 2 while he also led in a match that went unfinished on Tuesday. At No. 1 doubles, he and partner Ryan Vande Linde finished 5-0.


Women’s Tennis

Katie Gillman, Senior, Red Wing, Minn.

Helping the Blugolds to a 5-0 record on Spring Break in Hilton Head Island, S.C., Gillman dropped just one match to start the week. She bounced back to finish the week 4-1 at No. 1 singles while she and partner Maddie Johnson, playing at No. 1 doubles, went 5-0.
