2013-14 UWEC Athletes of the Week - Week 24 (Feb. 17-23)

EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (Blugolds.com) - Six UW-Eau Claire student-athletes have been recognized by being named an Athlete of the Week for the 24th week of the 2013-14 season.

Women’s Basketball

Courtney Lewis, Forward, 5-10, Junior, Prairie du Chien, Wis.

Lewis averaged 12.5 points and 9.5 rebounds in two games this week. In a 69-58 win over UW-Platteville on Wednesday, Lewis finished with 11 points and eight rebounds, playing 35 minutes. Saturday in a 73-53 loss at 11th-ranked UW-Whitewater, she recorded a double-double, tying for a game-high with 14 points and leading the game with 11 rebounds. Lewis also had eight assists and three steals this week.


Men’s Hockey

David Henry, Forward, 5-7, 175, Freshman, Foster City, Calif./Junipero Serra

Playing in two games this week to wrap up the regular season, the Blugolds split wins, falling 3-2 to UW-Stout on Thursday and defeating 10th-ranked UW-River Falls 2-1 on Saturday. Against the Falcons, Henry scored the Blugolds’ game-winning goal with 1:15 left to play, the first goal in his career with the Blugolds. Eau Claire trailed for more than 37 minutes but scored two unanswered in the third period to secure the win. Thursday against UW-Stout, Henry finished with five shots, third most on the team, as the Blugolds recorded a total of 53 shots.


Gymnastics

Specialist – Erin Olson, Freshman, Faribault, Minn./Shattuck-St. Mary’s

Olson had a career-high on the balance beam this weekend, competing at UW-La Crosse to close the regular season. She recorded a score of 9.350 to take fifth place, the Blugolds’ second highest finish. Olson was also seventh in the floor exercise with a score of 9.175.


Men’s Indoor Track & Field

Track – 4x400-Meter Relay – Cody Prince, Junior, Appleton, Wis./North; William LaJeunesse, Sophomore, Belle Plaine, Minn.; Jimmy Paske, Freshman, Minnetonka, Minn./Hopkins; Thurgood Dennis, Junior, Allouez, Wis./Green Bay Notre Dame

Competing at the Eastbay Invite at UW-Stevens Point on Saturday where the Blugolds took third place, the Blugolds’ 4x400-meter relay team took the top spot with a time of 3:17.58, the fastest time in the nation so far this season.


Women’s Indoor Track & Field

Track – Carly Fehler, Junior, Oak Creek, Wis.

Competing at the Eastbay Invite at UW-Stevens Point on Saturday where the Blugolds took first place, Fehler snagged a double-victory on the day by sweeping the sprint events. She claimed the 60-meter dash in 7.81 seconds, the 11th fastest time in the nation, while winning the 200-meter dash in 25.68 seconds, the 14th fastest time in the nation.


Men’s Tennis

Michael Mauthe, Freshman, Neenah, Wis.

Mauthe went 2-0 in both singles and doubles matches this weekend, competing in three contests at home. In a 9-0 win over St. Norbert College on Friday, Mauthe and his No. 3 doubles partner won 8-4. Saturday morning in a 9-0 win over Loras College (Iowa), he won 6-1, 6-0 at No. 6 singles and also picked up an 8-0 No. 2 doubles victory. Against MSOE on Saturday afternoon, an event the Blugolds won 8-1, Mauthe won 6-2, 6-1 at No. 3 singles. He is now 3-0 on the season in singles play and 3-1 in doubles matches.
