2013-14 UWEC Athletes of the Week - Week 22 (Feb. 3-9)

EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (Blugolds.com) - Nine UW-Eau Claire student-athletes have been recognized by being named an Athlete of the Week for the 22nd week of the 2013-14 season.

Men’s Basketball

Adam Hjelter, Guard, 6-0, 172, Sophomore, Hutchinson, Minn.

With the Blugolds splitting wins this week, Hjelter averaged 29 points and 4.5 rebounds. Helping the Blugolds to a 73-65 victory over UW-River Falls on Saturday, Hjelter scored 39 points, just 10 shy of the Blugolds' school record of 49 points, held by Tony Carr since 1982. He went 10-for-15 from the field, including 6-for-10 from beyond the arc, while going 13-for-14 from the free throw line. Wednesday he led the Blugolds with 19 points but the Blugolds came up short to UW-Superior 70-62. For the week he finished with nine rebounds, eight steals and one assist, and shot 53.3 percent from the field.


Women’s Basketball

Teenie Lichtfuss, Guard, 5-10, Sophomore, Oshkosh, Wis./Lourdes

Lichtfuss led the Blugolds in scoring twice this week as the team split wins. In a 73-56 victory over UW-Superior on Wednesday, Lichtfuss scored 21 points, going 7-for-14 from the field and 5-for-5 from the free throw line. She also led the Blugolds with 14 points on Saturday in a 47-44 loss to UW-River Falls. For the week she averaged 17.5 points and 5 rebounds while coming away with eight assists and six steals. Lichtfuss was perfect from the free throw line, going 9-for-9.


Men’s Hockey

Tyler Green, Goalie, 6-3, 183, Sophomore, Noblesville, Ind.

Helping the Blugolds to two WIAC victories this weekend, Green played all 120 minutes in-goal and gave up just two goals while the Blugolds scored nine. Friday night in a 3-0 win over UW-Superior, Green stopped 29 shots to record his fifth shutout of the year and the team’s eighth, both of which are school records. Saturday in a 6-2 win over the Yellowjackets, Green faced 44 shots and made 42 saves. Starting 15 games this season, Green now has 418 saves while giving up 27 goals for a goals-against-average of 1.84 and a save percentage of .939.


Gymnastics

Specialist – Leah Robinette, Sophomore, Woodbury, Minn./East Ridge

With the Blugolds taking second at the John Zuerlein Invitational on Friday, Robinette won the uneven bars while taking 12th on the vault. She took first on the uneven bars with a score of 9.350 and recorded a career-high on the vault, a 9.050.


Wrestling

Nathaniel Behnke, 141 Pounds, Sophomore, Bruce, Wis.

Behnke went 5-1 this week at 141 pounds, competing in two different meets at home. Friday against UW-Oshkosh, he defeated Joe Pelkey with a pin in 1:48. Behnke then took second at the Blugold Open on Saturday. He opened with two victories by fall, then won by medical forfeit and followed with an 8-2 win to get to the title match. In the championship match, he narrowly fell to UW-Parkside’s Adam Yde, 5-3, to finish in second place.


Men’s Indoor Track & Field

Track – Matt Scott, Senior, Kiel, Wis.

At UW-Stevens Point’s Pointer Open on Saturday, where the Blugolds took first place out of 10 teams, Scott won the one-mile run. He took down defending national champion Dan Sullivan in the event with a time of 4:12.66, the ninth fastest time in the nation and more than four seconds in front of Sullivan.

Field – Roger Steen, Junior, Luck, Wis.

At UW-Stevens Point’s Pointer Open on Saturday, where the Blugolds took first place out of 10 teams, Steen won both the throws for the second time this season. He won the shot put with a heave of 16.85 meters (55-3.5) and the weight throw with a toss of 17.41 meters (57-1.5). Steen’s toss in the shot put was the sixth best in the nation so far this year while the distance in the weight throw was the 18th best.


Women’s Indoor Track & Field

Track – Carly Fehler, Junior, Oak Creek, Wis.

Fehler won two events to help lead the Blugolds to 125 points and a second place finish at UW-Stevens Point's Pointer Invitational on Saturday. She won the 60-meter dash in a time of 7.93 seconds, tied for the 26th best time in the nation this season, and later won the 200-meter dash in a time of 26.06 seconds, tied for the 19th best time in the nation so far this year.


Men’s Tennis

Nathan Tretsven, Sophomore, North St. Paul, Minn.

In an 8-1 win over Judson University (Ill.) on Friday, Tretsven won at No. 5 singles 6-0, 6-0 in his first match this season.
