2013-14 UWEC Athletes of the Week - Week 21 (Jan. 27-Feb. 2)

EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (Blugolds.com) - Eight UW-Eau Claire student-athletes have been recognized by being named an Athlete of the Week for the 21st week of the 2013-14 season.

Women’s Basketball

Teenie Lichtfuss, Guard, 5-10, Sophomore, Oshkosh, Wis./Lourdes

Lichtfuss led the Blugolds in scoring in two games this week as the Blugolds split conference wins. Saturday in a 57-47 victory at UW-La Crosse, Lichtfuss scored a team-high 15 points and had nine steals, one short of the Blugolds’ single-game record. She also had six rebounds, tied for third most on the team. Against UW-Stevens Point on Wednesday, the Blugolds kept it close nearly the entire way but ended up falling 60-50, although they were behind by just four points with less than one minute remaining. In that game she had 14 points to lead the team while coming away with four assists and three rebounds. She finished the week shooting 40.9 percent (9-for-22) from the field and went 8-for-9 (88.9 percent) from the free throw line, and totaled nine steals, six assists and one blocked shot.


Men’s Hockey

Tyler Green, Goalie, 6-3, 183, Sophomore, Noblesville, Ind.

Playing in two games this weekend at UW-Stout, Green played all but six seconds in-goal and gave up just one goal as the Blugolds won both contests. Friday in a 4-0 victory, Green stopped 23 shots while stopping 32 out of 33 shots on Saturday in a 3-1 win over the Blue Devils. Green is now 9-4-0 on the season and has recorded four shutouts.


Women’s Hockey

Nikki Kothenbeutel, Forward, 5-7, Senior, Sauk Rapids, Minn./Sauk Rapids-Rice

Playing two games this week, Kothenbeutel scored two goals and recorded two assists as the Blugolds split wins. In a 4-3 victory over Hamline University (Minn.) on Wednesday, Kothenbeutel scored the Blugolds’ third goal in the third period on a power-play at 8:21 while picking up an assist on the Blugolds’ game-winner, which came just 26 seconds later. Saturday the Blugolds played sixth-ranked UW-Stevens Point close but fell just short, 3-2. Kothenbeutel was part of both Blugold goals, assisting on the first goal at 8:46 in the opening period and scoring the Blugolds’ second goal, unassisted, at 15:56 in the second period. She now leads the team with six goals and is second on the team with 10 points.


Gymnastics

Specialist – Taylor Custer, Junior, Hudson, Ohio

With the Blugolds defeating Gustavus Adolphus College (Minn.) 180.275-172.250 on Saturday, Custer placed for the first time in her collegiate career as she took third on the balance beam with a score of 9.100, a season-high. She received 10.0 start values on the beam.


Men’s Tennis

Josh Chuba, Freshman, Elk River, Minn.

Opening the season against NCAA Division I South Dakota State University at home on Sunday, Chuba had the Blugolds’ lone win as he won No. 6 singles in straight sets, 6-2, 6-4.


Men’s Indoor Track & Field

Track – Brandon Zarnoth, Junior, Appleton, Wis./North

Zarnoth set a school record in the 60-meter hurdles as the Blugolds competed at the Warren Bowlus Open at UW-Stout on Saturday. He won the event with a time of 8.26 seconds, beating the Blugolds' old school record of 8.36 seconds, which was set last season. His time ranks 12th best in the nation and third fastest in the WIAC.

Field – Roger Steen, Junior, Luck, Wis.

Steen had a good day as he won both the shot put and weight throw at the Warren Bowlus Open at UW-Stout on Saturday. He took first in the shot put with a distance of 16.84 meters (55-3), the fifth longest toss in the nation and first in the conference, while winning the weight throw with a toss of 17.32 meters (56-10), the 17th best in the nation.


Women’s Indoor Track & Field

Track – Lindsey Laufenberg, Junior, Waunakee, Wis.

Laufenberg took first in the 200-meter dash as the Blugolds competed at the Warren Bowlus Open at UW-Stout on Saturday. She won the event with a time of 26.96 seconds.
