EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (Blugolds.com) - Seven UW-Eau Claire Athletics teams were in action today, two at home and five on the road.
Gymnastics
UW-Eau Claire 180.275, Gustavus Adolphus (Minn.) 172.250
The women's gymnastics team picked up a 180.275-172.250 victory over Gustavus Adolphus College (Minn.) this afternoon. Eau Claire finished the day with wins in four events. Kellie Dougherty led the way for Eau Claire as she won two events, the uneven bars and balance beam.
Women's Indoor Track & Field
Warren Bowlus Open
The women's indoor track & field team competed at the Warren Bowlus Open, hosted by UW-Stout, and came away with three event victories today. Additionally, the Blugolds had six second or third place finishes.
Men's Indoor Track & Field
Warren Bowlus Open
Brandon Zarnoth set a school record, winning the 60-meter hurdles, as the men's indoor track & field team competed at the Warren Bowlus Open, hosted by UW-Stout, today. Zarnoth won the event with a time of 8.26 seconds, beating the Blugolds' old school record of 8.36 seconds set by Tony Floyd last season. The Blugolds also came away with five other wins.
Women's Basketball
UW-Eau Claire 57, UW-La Crosse 47
It was a close battle nearly the entire way but a late run helped the women's basketball team defeat UW-La Crosse 57-47 in Mitchell Hall Saturday afternoon. After a 35-35 tie with less than 10 minutes to play, the Blugolds worked their way to a six point lead. The Eagles then went on a 5-0 run to get back to within one (43-42) with less than four minutes left, but over the next two minutes, the Blugolds used a 9-0 to get up by 10. The closest La Crosse got the rest of the way was seven points. Teenie Lichtfuss led the Blugolds in scoring with 15 points.
Women's Hockey
UW-Stevens Point 3, UW-Eau Claire 2
The women's hockey team played sixth-ranked UW-Stevens Point close but came up just short in the end, falling 3-2 at Hobbs Ice Center tonight. The Blugolds scored one goal in the opening period and one in the second period but the Pointers answered each time. Stevens Point, which outshot the Blugolds 42-16, added one more goal in the third period.
Men's Basketball
UW-Eau Claire 60, UW-La Crosse 57
After losing five straight games, the men's basketball team was able to get a victory tonight, narrowly defeating UW-La Crosse 60-57 on Ken Anderson Court in Zorn Arena. While the Blugolds led 33-22 at halftime, the Eagles steadily chipped away at the Blugolds' lead and took their first lead of the night at 50-49 with less than four minutes to play. That was the only lead for La Crosse but the Blugolds held only a one-point lead with a few seconds left. Adam Hjelter, who led Eau Claire with 14 points and nine rebounds, hit two free throws at the end to give Eau Claire a three-point lead and La Crosse was unable to score any more points despite having the ball at the end.
Men's Hockey
UW-Eau Claire 3, UW-Stout 1
The seventh-ranked men's hockey team scored one goal in the first period and added two more in the second while giving up just one in the second to the Blue Devils. Three different Blugolds scored and one of the goals came on power-plays. Stout finished the game outshooting Eau Claire 33-28.
