2013-14 UWEC Athletes of the Week - Week 20 (Jan. 20-26)

EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (Blugolds.com) - Eleven UW-Eau Claire student-athletes have been recognized by being named an Athlete of the Week for the 20th week of the 2013-14 season.

Women’s Basketball

Kristin Sahr, guard, 5-9, Junior, Stillwater, Minn.

Sahr averaged 13.5 points in two games this week as the Blugolds split conference wins. On Saturday in a 76-50 victory over UW-Stout, Sahr led the game with a career-high 24 points coming off the bench. She finished the game 6-for-11 from the field, including 3-for-6 from beyond the arc, while also going 9-for-9 from the free throw line. Sahr had six rebounds against the Blue Devils, third most on the team. Against UW-Oshkosh on Wednesday, she scored three points as the Blugolds fell 58-45. For the week, Sahr also had four assists and two steals.


Men’s Hockey

David Donnellan, Defenseman, 5-11, 186, Senior, Eau Claire, Wis./Memorial

Donnellan scored two goals and picked up three assists this weekend as the Blugolds split with 13th-ranked UW-River Falls at home. Friday in an 8-3 win over the Falcons, Donnellan assisted on the Blugolds’ first, sixth and eighth goals while he scored the Blugolds’ seventh goal on a power-play with just over seven minutes to play in the game. The win was the Blugolds’ seventh straight, tied for third most in school history, and after holding the Falcons without a goal for nearly 35 minutes, set an NCAA Division III record for shutout minutes with 354 minutes and 25 seconds going back to Dec. 13. Saturday, Donnellan scored the Blugolds’ only goal at 7:03 in the first period but the Falcons scored three unanswered to win 3-1 and end the Blugolds’ win streak. Donnellan is fourth on the team with 14 points from six assists and a team-leading eight goals.


Women’s Hockey

Julia Osowski, Forward, 5-2, Sophomore, Princeton, Minn.

Osowski competed in two games this weekend against eighth-ranked UW-Superior. The Blugolds fell short 5-0 in both games, the first which was played in Superior on Friday while the second was contested in Eau Claire on Saturday.


Wresting

Nathaniel Behnke, 141 Pounds, Sophomore, Bruce, Wis.

Behnke went 3-1 for the week, competing in a conference dual on Wednesday and at the UW-Whitewater Border Brawl Duals on Saturday. At 141 pounds on Saturday, Behnke started the day with a 12-3 major decision win and followed with a 14-0 victory before ending the day with a 13-0 win to go 3-0. Wednesday against UW-Stevens Point, he narrowly fell 2-1. For the season, Behnke now holds a 24-6 overall record.


Gymnastics

Specialist – Olivia Aschenbrenner, Senior, Cedarburg, Wis./Grafton

Aschenbrenner helped the Blugolds to a 182.225-177.325 over Hamline University (Minn.) with one win and a third-place finish. She won the balance beam with a score of 9.500, a season-high, while taking third on the uneven bars with a score of 9.000. She also scored a 9.050 in an exhibition routine in the floor exercise.


Men’s Indoor Track & Field

Track – Thurgood Dennis, Junior, Allouez, Wis./Green Bay Notre Dame

Friday at the Prairie Wolf Indoor Invitational in Nebraska, Dennis recorded two wins. He took first in the 200-meter dash with a time of 21.74, which leads the nation, while he was part of the Blugolds’ winning 4x400-meter relay team that finished with a time of 3:18.59.

Field – Roger Steen, Junior, Luck, Wis.

Steen helped lead the Blugolds to a second place finish at the UW-Platteville Triangular on Saturday, winning two events, the shot put and weight throw. He finished with a distance of 16.35 meters (53-7.75) in the shot put and 16.55 meters (54-3.75) in the weight throw.


Women’s Indoor Track & Field

Track – Kayla Kelsey, Junior, Sparta, Wis.

Kelsey had two of the Blugolds' four event wins at the UW-Platteville Triangular, where the Blugolds came in third place. She took first in the 60-meter dash with a time of 8.03 seconds and won the 200-meter dash with a time of 26.89 seconds.


Men’s Swimming & Diving

Swimming – Alex Card, Senior, Prior Lake, Minn.

Card led the Blugolds as he was part of four victories, three individually and one as part of a relay team, facing UW-Whitewater for Senior Day on Saturday. He took first in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 59.56 seconds, first in the 200-yard breaststroke with a time of 2:12.36 and first in the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 2:00.74. Card was also part of the Blugolds’ winning 200-yard medley relay team that had a time of 1:38.54.


Women’s Swimming & Diving

Swimming – Elissa Hermsen, Freshman, Waunakee, Wis.

Hermsen led the Blugolds with two event victories as they faced UW-Whitewater on Senior Day on Saturday. She finished in first place in the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 2:15.93 and won the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 1:00.62. She also took fifth in the 200-yard individual medley and was part of the Blugolds’ 200-yard medley relay team that took second, missing first place by 0.03 seconds.

Diving – Amanda Baker, Sophomore, Hudson, Wis.

Baker won the three-meter dive and took fourth in the one-meter as the Blugolds faced UW-Whitewater for Senior Day on Saturday. She scored 266.95 points to win the three-meter dive and finished with 255.85 in the one-meter.
