2013-14 UWEC Athletes of the Week - Week 13 (Nov. 18-24)

EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (Blugolds.com) - A total of eight UW-Eau Claire student-athletes have been recognized by being named an Athlete of the Week for the 13th week of the 2013-14 season.

Men’s Basketball

Kurtis Moody, Forward, 6-2, 214, Sophomore, Pequot Lakes, Minn.

Playing in three games this week, Moody helped the Blugolds to a 2-1 record and a third-place finish at the Bethel University Tournament. Starting the week against the College of St. Scholastica (Minn.) on Tuesday with a 77-59 win, he was second on the team in 14 points while also pulling in five rebounds. Friday, the Blugolds fell 67-74 but Moody led the team with a double-double, scoring 18 points and pulling down 12 rebounds. Saturday in the third-place game against Marian University, a game the Blugolds won 81-79, Moody was again second on the team with 18 points and eight rebounds. For the week he averaged 16.7 points per game, tied for a team-high, and led the Blugolds with 25 rebounds. He went 18-for-32 (56.3 percent) from the field and 14-for-22 from the free throw line (63.6 percent).


Women’s Basketball

Teenie Lichtfuss, Guard, 5-10, Sophomore, Oshkosh, Wis./Lourdes

Playing in two games this week, Lichtfuss reached double digits in scoring in both games as she averaged 18.5 points. Thursday in a 74-69 victory over the College of St. Scholastica (Minn.), she was second on the team with 16 points while she had a game-high four steals. Saturday at Simpson College (Iowa), she led the game with 21 points and six steals as the Blugolds fell short 83-75. For the week she went 13-for-20 (65 percent) from the field and was 9-for-11 (81.8 percent) from the free throw line. Playing 63 minutes, she had a total of 10 steals, six rebounds, six assists and one blocked shot.


Men’s Hockey

Jon Waggoner, Forward, 5-9, 193, Senior, Fairbanks, Alaska/Lathrop

In two games this weekend, Waggoner scored four goals and picked up one assist as the No. 1 Blugolds split. Friday against No. 2 St. Norbert College, a game the Blugolds lost 5-2, Waggoner scored both goals, one in the second period and one in the third. Saturday in a 7-0 victory over Concordia University (Wis.), he scored the eventual game-winner less than eight minutes into the contest on a power-play, and two minutes later assisted on a short-handed goal to give the Blugolds a 2-0 lead. Just over two minutes before the end of the first period, he found the back of the net again for his fourth goal of the year and the Blugolds’ fourth goal of the game. He is now tied for first place on the team with eight points this season.


Wrestling

Luke Ortscheid, 197 Pounds, Senior, Wausau, Wis./West

Ortscheid competed in five matches in two different meets this weekend at 197 pounds. Friday in the Blugolds’ WIAC and home opener against UW-La Crosse, he fell in 6:17 when Alastair Keys pinned him. Saturday at the Auggie-Brute Open at Augsburg College, he finished with a 2-2 record to take sixth place in the 197-pound gold bracket. Ortscheid opened with a 10-7 win but fell in the next round. He then won the next round 9-5 before narrowly falling 8-6 in the fifth-place match.


Men’s Swimming & Diving

Swimming – Aaron Lickel, Senior, Madison, Wis./East

Facing UW-River Falls and UW-Oshkosh on Saturday, Lickel won two individual events while taking first and second as part of two relay teams to help the Blugolds to a win. Lickel took first in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 22.60 seconds and was first in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 49.85 seconds, both season best times. He and his teammates won the 200-yard freestyle relay with a time of 1:28.61 and took second in the 200-yard medley relay with a time of 1:41.87.

Diving – Shawn Westphal, Sophomore, Eau Claire, Wis./North

Westphal won both diving events as the Blugolds defeated UW-Oshkosh and UW-River Falls on Saturday. He took first in the three-meter dive with a score of 192.45 and won the one-meter with 210.45 points.


Women’s Swimming & Diving

Swimming – Maggie Reilly, Senior, Saint Michael, Minn./St. Michael-Albertville

In two different meets this weekend, Reilly picked up three victories. On Friday against Minnesota State University-Moorhead she won the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 1:01.76 and was second in the 50-yard butterfly with a time of 27.96 seconds and in the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 2:20.04. Saturday against UW-Oshkosh, UW-River Falls and Moorhead, Reilly won the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 2:20.69 and took first in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 1:01.92. She also swam on two relay teams that took third and fourth places.

Diving – Amanda Baker, Sophomore, Hudson, Wis.

Competing in four events in two different meets this weekend, Baker claimed first place three times and was second one other time while finishing with three national qualifying marks. Friday against Minnesota State University-Moorhead, she won the one-meter dive with 261.05 points and won the three-meter with 265.55 points. Facing UW-Oshkosh, UW-River Falls and Moorhead on Saturday, Baker took first in the one-meter dive with 267.60 points and scored 245.15 in the three-meter to take second.
