Game Day Review - Saturday, November 23, 2013

EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (Blugolds.com) - Eight UW-Eau Claire Athletics teams were in action today, two at home while six were on the road.

Women's Swimming & Diving

The women's swimming & diving team took second place at its home quad meet today in the McPhee Physical Education Center. Minnesota State University-Moorhead finished in first while UW-Oshkosh and UW-River Falls were third and fourth respectively. The Blugolds claimed seven first-place finishes along with six second place finishes. Two Blugolds each won two events to lead the team.

Men's Swimming & Diving

The men's swimming & diving team finished in first place out of three teams, hosting a meet in the McPhee Physical Education Center today. Eau Claire won the meet with 898 points while UW-River Falls was second with 329 and UW-Oshkosh was third with 304. The Blugolds won 10 events while taking second in 14. Two Blugolds each won two individual events.

Men's Cross Country

NCAA Championship - 9th of 32

For the second consecutive year, the men's cross country team is leaving nationals with the best finish in school history as a part of the NCAA Division III. Led by a 13th-place and All-American finish from Ryan Mugan, the Blugolds placed ninth overall out of 32 teams with 305 points at the NCAA Division III Championship, hosted by Hanover College. The Blugolds placed 10th a year ago. St. Olaf College (Minn.) won the meet with 84 points, capturing its first national title in history.

Wrestling

Two Blugold wrestlers, Josh Cormican and Luke Ortscheid, finished in the top six as the Blugolds competed at the Auggie-Brute Open, hosted by Augsburg College (Minn.) at Si Melby Hall today. Nathaniel Behnke also won a consolation title.

Men's Basketball

UW-Eau Claire 81, Marian University 79

The men's basketball team was able to fend off a frantic rally from the Marian Sabers to hold on and win 81-79 in the second and final day of the Bethel University Tournament to finish in third place. The Blugolds are now 3-1 on the season. Adam Hjelter led the offensive attack with 20 points, including 5-for-8 from three.

Women's Basketball

Simpson College (Iowa) 83, UW-Eau Claire 75

Despite leading by 13 points at halftime, the women's basketball team was unable to hang on, falling to Simpson College (Iowa) 83-75 at Cowles Fieldhouse Saturday afternoon. Three Blugolds reached double figures in scoring with Teenie Lichtfuss leading the game with 21 points while also finishing with a game-high five assists.

Men's Hockey

UW-Eau Claire 7, Concordia (Wis.) 0

Coming off their first loss of the season, the men's hockey team rebounded in a big way Saturday night with a 7-0 victory over Concordia. The Blugolds opened with four goals in the opening period and scored one more in the second and two more in the third. Jon Waggoner and Charles Thauwald each scored two goals apiece.

Women's Hockey

UW-River Falls 6, UW-Eau Claire 0

For the second time in as many nights, the women's hockey team was unable to score any goals against UW-River Falls and the Falcons went on to win 6-0 in River Falls tonight. River Falls led the shot chart 44-12.
