EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (Blugolds.com) - Eight UW-Eau Claire Athletics teams were in action today, three at home and five on the road.
Women's Swimming & Diving
Gustavus Adolphus (Minn.) 181, UW-Eau Claire 130
Northern Michigan 195, UW-Eau Claire 121
Facing Northern Michigan University and Gustavus Adolphus College (Minn.), the women's swimming & diving team came away with two individual wins, both diving, and three runner-up finishes in the McPhee Physical Education Center today.
Men's Swimming & Diving
UW-Eau Claire 174, Gustavus Adolphus (Minn.) 120
The swimming & diving team defeated Gustavus Adolphus College (Minn.) 174-120 at the McPhee Physical Education Center today. The Blugolds recorded 10 victories on the day, two diving, two relays and six individual swimming wins.
Wrestling
The wrestling team kicked off the 2013-14 season competing at Rochester Community and Technical College's Yellowjacket Open today. Three Blugolds claimed runner-up finishes while a total of five finished in the top six.
Women's Cross Country
WIAC Championship - 4th of 9
Even though the women's cross country team saw its six-year conference championship reign come to an end, the Blugolds still got four all-conference performances to finish in fourth place at the WIAC Cross Country Championships at Kilkarney Golf Course, hosted by UW-River Falls. UW-River Falls took third while the Blugolds were fourth, both with 86 points. UW-La Crosse won the meet with 34 points while UW-Stevens Point took second with 78. Nikki Rendler took 11th and Alana Jenkins took 12th to earn second-team all-conference honors.
Men's Cross Country
WIAC Championship - 2nd of 9
The men's cross country team was five points away from capturing its first WIAC cross country title since its only one in 1980. The Blugolds finished second for the second consecutive year to UW-La Crosse, scoring 58 points to the Eagles' 53 at Kilkarney Hills Golf Course, hosted by UW-River Falls. Ryan Mugan and Matt Scott snagged first-team all-conference honors for the Blugolds with fifth and seventh-place finishes, respectively.
Women's Volleyball
UW-Eau Claire 3, Concordia (Wis.) 0 (25-10, 25-16,
26-24)
UW-Eau Claire 3, Millikin (Ill.) 0 (25-20, 25-23, 25-17)
The women's volleyball team won its sixth match in a row with two more 3-0 victories at the Illinois Wesleyan University Tournament today to end the regular season. Eau Claire won two matches yesterday 3-0 and followed with 3-0 wins over Concordia University (Wis.) and Millikin University (Ill.) today. The Blugolds will now turn their attention to the WIAC Tournament, which gets started Tuesday. The Blugolds have a bye in the first round but will play in the semifinal Friday at 5 p.m. in Stevens Point.
Football
UW-Stout 35, UW-Eau Claire 27
Despite trailing the entire game, the football team made a second-half comeback that came up just short in a 35-27 loss to UW-Stout at Don and Nona Williams Stadium today. The Blugolds have had the I-94 Trophy in their possession for the past two years after winning in 2011 and 2012 but had to relinquish the trophy with the loss today. Billy Emanuel nailed two field goals and Joel Sweeney had three touchdowns, one a 70-yard scamper.
Women's Hockey
St. Scholastica (Minn.) 4, UW-Eau Claire 0
Coming off a 2-2 tie with St. Scholastica (Minn.) on Friday night, the two teams met again Saturday afternoon at Hobbs Ice Center. The Saints got on the board first and never looked back, and the women's hockey team fell 4-0 in their first loss this season. Paige Turner was busy in goal once again for the Blugolds, turning away 29 shots.
